We certainly have had a good stretch of nice, varied weather. Just enough rain and dew to help the gardens. Yesterday I joined friends for a late afternoon dip in the Sunday River. Cool and refreshing on a hot, humid day. I often reminisce about how I took my children to the covered bridge on lazy, idyllic days; as we filed down over the embankment I would warn them about the slippery rocks and the nearby poison ivy. 50+ year olds now, with grown children of their own, and I still feel compelled to protect all of them.

I suppose we never stop nurturing what we hope to preserve and see flourish. I think of children of all ages, wild and domestic animals, gardens and forests, and both long-standing and emerging friendships and family ties. We also nurture the institutions that support our communities’ well-being, including schools, houses of worship, medical facilities, and public safety services. The Bethel Area Age-Friendly Community Initiative (AFCI), Rotary, the Outing Club, the RePant project, the 4-H Youth Hub, and other local volunteer-run nonprofits play an invaluable role in supporting individuals and strengthening the broader community.

We all are invited to have a place at the table. To be a spoke in the wheel. A leg of a stool. You get the picture.

AFCI could use your support in helping our older citizens to stay in their own homes, in their own neighborhoods. Like you, we would like to see people of all ages flourish. An “age-friendly community” is for all ages. You probably have noticed on our monthly “Events of Interest to Older Folks and Their Families” includes social opportunities that are designed for people of all ages.

We need more volunteer drivers to ensure that every older adult who requests a ride can receive one. Unfortunately, we must decline some requests because we do not have enough volunteers. Please reach out to: melindaremington@yahoo.com or by leaving a message at the AFCI Tel.#

I would like to share a reflection I wrote today:

This week I caught a sweet exchange between 2 women as we were finishing up our group stretching exercise session at the pool. One woman had complained of pain in her rib cage area from doing yard work the day before. We had all noticed her discomfort and that it had limited her normal robust participation that morning. We did feel bad for her and said we were sorry to see her experiencing twinges of pain.

At the end of our hour-long session, I noticed a fellow swimmer move closer to speak quietly with her. I could not hear their conversation, but I saw the woman stand behind the ailing lady. She preceded to hold her two hands, palms flat, on both sides of other’s rib cage, about three to four inches away without touching. They stood silently as one cared for the other. She was offering a Reiki treatment to help ease her friend’s pain. After about five minutes, they spoke to each other. Had that “non-touch” ministration helped? I learned through my own questions to them, “What was that?” that both women were skilled in Reiki. Interestingly, neither had known about the other’s training.

What I witnessed in those short minutes was someone showing compassion and then demonstrating care by offering what they could to help someone else. She did not just say she was sorry. She offered a possible solution.

The woman with the healing hands was led to offer the gift of her time and skill. The other woman humbly accepted, with thanks.

Think about how each of us can demonstrate compassion and care to anyone in need, whether the situation is large or small. We might bring a meal to a sick neighbor, listen patiently to someone who is grieving, help a stranger carry a grocery bag, or simply offer a kind word to a person having a difficult day. We can also practice humility when others care for us by accepting their help and saying a sincere thank you. Which comes more easily to you: offering help or receiving it?

My friend who likes to swim in Sunday River just texted. I must run along. I am going to join her and go swimming again this afternoon. This time at a local public sandy beach. Another place I used to take my children….

It has been such a busy summer! Acting as your AFCI Community Connector I attend many community-wide events and small group gatherings. Sometimes I might visit one individual at a time. One of my missions is to become more aware of how local older citizens are faring and offer information and access to beneficial programs and services. I learn about many age-related concerns and supports by attending zoom meetings that feature agency specialists in many fields. These, along with Lifelong Maine publications and on-line courses, are very informative and provide answers to many questions you and I have. Besides this weekly column, the monthly “Events of Interest” handout (includes 2 back pages about AFCI services and contact info), the AFCI website, and Facebook are the main places to keep you informed. I do hope you use these to stay up to date.

While I love this area and would not trade it for any other place it is almost always beneficial to visit other places—a chance to move out of our comfort zones and see how others live and think. Often referred to as “culture.” My husband and I moved back to his hometown of Bethel in 1974 to raise our children. And what a wonderful place for a young family to find a great supportive community in which to thrive. As much as I love it here, I am always open to getting away.

Recently I was offered an unexpected opportunity to go with friends to Monhegan Island for a few days. The one hour ferry ride out of Port Clyde was the first step to relaxing; the briny sea air, cries of seagulls, vista of sea, sky, and islands transported us to a slower rhythm.

What a joy to spend time with friends, visiting art galleries, walking the woods and shoreline, eating fresh fish at the “Fish Shack,” preparing and sharing meals together, laughing and playing cards at night.

Not to mention the back deck of the rented old farmhouse where we sat to watch many birds across a wide expanse of meadow, the lighthouse sitting high on a hill. From the front we had a view of a small sand beach, boats bobbing on the water, and a near island.

This little rejuvenating get-away was just what I needed!

July has been busy, and I imagine many of you feel the same. I try to eat well, exercise, rest, nurture relationships, keep up with home and yard, serve as your Community Connector—and still make time for sewing. At 74, I’m learning it’s okay to slow down a little while enjoying the things that help me stay balanced and healthy.

I want to share a small snippet of my personal life with you so you can get to know me better. You will see the kinds of activities I attend, mostly community related that are listed in our Monthly Events handout. Pictures speak louder than words; I will share some of my favorites with captions.

After seeing my pictures, I sincerely hope you will share with me your photos and favorite activities. Just write a brief description. This way we can all get to know our neighbors better.

After Tuesday’s 9:00 am walk at ‘Buck’s Ledge Trail for All’ , Ed Rosenberg and his wife Leslie led us out to meet the trail crew from the Maine Conservation Corps. The young hearty folks hailed from Arizona, upstate NY, and PA. They are doing fabulous work. Coming from the other direction we met Marcel Polak. Also checking out the work were Jane Chandler and Dick Stratton. It is a busy place up there as we also met a large group from the Maine 4-H Camp in Bryant Pond and a large family group from Exeter, NH. The members of the Woodstock Conservation Commission are to be commended for their dedication to developing this local treasure.

Another day involved a walk on the Davis Park trail. I love the paintings on the sidewalk. The solar system and brig descriptions of each planet. Walking with friends is always a good idea. Lots of stories to share or quiet companionship.

Last weekend I attended the annual ‘ Smith Cousins Reunion ‘ at Kiwanis Beach in Standish. I grew up in North Windham and Portland, so not related to any local Smiths. Had a wonderful time catching up with those who live in Maine, Washington state, Georgia, North Carolina and New Hampshire. The next day it was back to Standish for a gala wedding party that included lobster dinners and dancing to a fantastic dance band. I am so happy for my older sister and new husband. The theme of the commitment ceremony was ‘It Is Never Too Late;’ the bride and groom looked joyous and the flowers that adorned the venue were outstanding!

The Thursday “Mornings at the Museum” are a big hit with local and visiting children and their caregivers. Teachers and students from Mahoosuc kids walk from Crescent Park for the 9:30-11:00 sessions of art, music, crafts, and museum exploring. Older volunteers and young “docents” work together for an enjoyable and meaningful experience. This year I sewed felt hand puppets for the children to personalize. It was a fun time and the children are very sweet, polite and appreciative. A joyful experience for me.

Docent Mia enjoyed working with the children. The nanny to three children proudly displays her charges’ creations.

These summer days sure are beautiful! I have been out and about these last couple of weeks and will share my pics of my adventures of being with my friends and neighbors. I hope you will consider sending me some pics and captions of what you have been up to this summer. In the family, I did send happy birthday wishes to my granddaughter Elizabeth’s cat.

Do any of you have a special pet? Amy Chapman joined our Tuesday morning walk at Buck’s Ledge Trail for All with her black Lab puppy, Lena. She was on a leash and very well behaved (Lena, not Amy…just a little joke). Amy was joining some of her family members whom you might recognize in the pics. Ed Rosenberg, a trail enthusiast and historian of the area, frequently regales us with interesting stories of people and nature in the area.

I recently attended one of the Andover Summer Concerts. Normally they are held outdoors at the Gazebo on the Common but this time they held it in the iconic Andover Congregational Church. The church was full and everyone was encouraged to sing along. The Andover folks and visitors were enthusiastic participants, singing easily remembered tunes from the 60s, 70s, and 80s! My friends and I did share delicious fried haddock, clams and scallops at Mills’ Market beforehand and then stopped at Katy’s Cones before heading home. My friends had never been to Andover so it was fun to introduce them to this beautiful and serene setting.

I hope you are enjoying your own garden or the ones dotted around your area towns. I spied volunteers Moriah McDonough and Bob Elliott beautifying Bethel last Sunday afternoon. Moriah watered thirsty plants while Bob picked up rocks that were strewn on the sidewalk. Thank you to all the folks who volunteer to make our world a better place in which to live and thrive.

Bethel Senior Citizens Club

More than 30 members of the Bethel Senior Citizens Club were hosted at their monthly meeting by the Morning Glory Farm in West Bethel.

After the meeting, and presentation of upcoming programs of the Museums of the Bethel Historical Society by Will Chapman, we enjoyed a variety of freshly cooked pizzas.

This was followed by singing, birthday wishes, and ice cream and cake.

Many folks won raffled items. Thank you to the generous donors of these unique and delightful gifts. Christine Trefethen then offered a tour of the farm that she operates along with Eric List. All agreed it was a beautiful day to enjoy each other’s company while in the midst of beautiful scenery. Older folks in our community were truly honored. Thank you to Morning Glory Farm crew.

July is here, and the temperatures certainly feel like summer! Be sure to take precautions to stay safe in this current heatwave. Get plenty of rest, stay hydrated, and become a shade lover instead of a sun worshiper until the heat breaks. If you choose to walk outdoors, early mornings are the best time, when temperatures are somewhat lower.

Western Maine Weekly Hikes for All Ages coordinator Sue Radway notes that many of the group hikes take place earlier in the morning, before the heat gets too intense. Here’s the schedule for the current week. You can find each week’s schedule posted on the Bethel Outing Club Facebook page before Monday.

One of the oak trees Paul Motts initiated the Rotary club planting along the pathway several years ago is finally taking off and growing well.

Hop, skip, and spin—you don’t have to be a youngster to enjoy the games and activities along the pathway at Davis Park!

One of the best pieces of advice I know is to take time to stop and smell the roses along the way, and what better spot for that than this covered bench along the pathway? Enjoy the shade, as well as the heavenly aroma of the old-fashioned roses.

AFCI board member and occupational therapist Brie Weisman recently spoke at a meeting of the Bethel Rotary Club. She emphasized the importance of grab bars and their proper placement in order to avoid falls. AFCI offers a free home simple safety assessment that Brie performs. Enjoy these fleeting summer days—they don’t last long!

June is certainly flying by! Recently, the beginning of a poem I had to memorize for my 9^th grade (1966) English class popped into my head. “What is so rare as a day in June? Then, if ever, come perfect days.” Now this is a long poem by American poet James Russell Lowell so I don’t believe we had to remember all of it, but I am sure we spent days analyzing it!

I am thankful for such an assortment of weather this June. Varying levels of sunshine and temperatures and enough rain that I do not have to hand water my gardens. They seem to be flourishing despite my neglect. Just yesterday I found the time and energy to weed my patio and bordering garden. Yes, even the stone patio is fertile ground for wild strawberries, violets and Big Bad Weeds. I feel very satisfied.

After spending quite a bit of time sitting on an old sheet so I would not have to bend so much I had to resort to the bending and stretching to really do the job properly. I am happy about the results but now must tackle the adjacent “woodland” perennial garden that is extremely overgrown with “Farmers Sunflowers.” If anyone would like some of these extras, please reach out to me. I will have lots to give away. This bright yellow, daisy-like plant likes lots of sunshine, easily spreads, and makes a nice tall hedge in August and September. The birds and bees love them!

As June ends, I want to remind everyone about two music programs you may enjoy. Both are free and open to all ages, from infants to very senior adults. I have attended both and can say they are equally enjoyable. You can sit quietly and listen, or you may feel inspired to get up and dance. On Friday, June 26, from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m., the Andover Summer Concert Series will feature Tim Dion with the Acoustapalians. The concert will be held rain or shine at the Andover Common Bandstand. Bring a chair and some friends for a fun evening. If you need dinner, you can order takeout from Mills’ Market. Arrive early because there is usually a line for Italian subs, fried clams, shrimp, chicken dinners, and other tempting foods (French fries and onion rings) that may not be the healthiest but are so hard to resist.

The last Saturday of each month you will find the popular Fossils playing and singing 50’s-90’s music at the Jackson Silver Post of the American Legion Hall, 593 Gore Road, Locke Mills/Greenwood. These are local musicians who give of their time and talent to entertain the community. There is no cost but donations to support improvements to the Legion Hall are welcomed. Again, this is very much an intergenerational event where you will see 90-year-olds dancing alongside 5-year-olds. Often you will see groups line-dancing together or just free-spirited individuals displaying their own signature moves. I often hear people remarking how they had not seen their neighbors in a dog’s age; glad for the opportunity to renew old acquaintances and catch up with each other. So, if you like to dance or just “people watch,” please come out.

Another great way to stay physically active while finding peace and mental clarity is to enjoy a short walk or a longer hike. I appreciate both for different reasons. Western Maine Hikes for All Ages is a new effort that is thriving thanks to several dedicated individuals. Some walks are on flat, accessible surfaces for older adults, people using canes, walkers, or wheelchairs, and families with strollers. Sarah Southam and Beth Hodgdon of the Bethel Outing Club greet walkers on the Davis Park Trail on Mondays from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. I greet people on Tuesdays from 9:00 to 10:00 a.m. at the upper parking lot of the new Buck’s Ledge Trail for All. Bev Harris is your greeter at Valentine Farm Trails on Thursdays 1:00-2:00 p.m. Make sure to check out the Habitat for All Garden while there. All walks offer valuable time in nature. At Davis Park, I have seen and heard many songbirds, including my favorite red-winged blackbirds. At Buck’s Ledge, I was recently startled to see a turkey and then a rabbit within the same minute. To learn more about the walks and hikes, please come to a potluck this Friday at 5:00 p.m. in the basement dining hall of West Parish Congregational Church. Sue Radway, who leads a variety of longer hikes, will present. I am sure there will be delightful food and photos to enjoy. Weekly hikes are also posted on the Bethel Outing Club Facebook page.

The last social event I must mention is the weekly Thursday Game’s On session 12:00-2:00 p.m. at the Whitman Memorial Library in Bryant Pond. All ages, abilities and cognitive levels are welcome. What a fun time! What started as just a few participants has grown so that we now need three tables to sit around. And an additional table to spread out our shared snacks! All are welcome and I hope to see you there sometime. Bring a friend.

This week I would like to thank Mariann Goff of East Bethel for her many years of service to the Bethel Area Age-Friendly Community Initiative. In her volunteer roles as an AFCI Board member, a Driver, and Rides Coordinator she has dedicated herself to the well-being of our older citizens. You may know her through her active community involvement in the Bethel Rotary Club and WMSC Senior Players. She is the one that plays her characters so well and makes us all laugh out loud! She is certainly a local treasure, and we will miss her as she retires from serving as a Rides Coordinator.

You may have questions about the Neighbor2Neighbor Rides Program

People age 60+ can have free rides to neighboring towns such as: South Paris/Norway, Rumford/Mexico, and Gorham/Berlin, NH. Or they may request rides around the Bethel area and other places within a 30-mile radius.

Volunteer drivers can take you to a variety of places: medical appointments, stores, social events and engagements.

The steps to follow are:

1.If you are a first-time rider, you must first call the AFCI 824-4444 number and leave a name, phone number and message. Someone will call you back and provide an application.

2. At least 3 days before your ride is needed, call the 824-4444 number to leave your name, telephone number, and message requesting the ride. Someone will return your call.

All Rides are free and every effort will be made to fulfil your request. While priority is given to medical appointments, please note that no rides are guaranteed.

We need more volunteer Drivers and Rides Coordinators. Please spread the word to friends and family—this is a rewarding way to serve the community and get to know neighbors. If interested, call 824-4444.

Often, for a more peaceful walk and a time for reflection and admiring nature, I walk on the spur of the Davis Park trail that takes you across the Alder River and across Middle Intervale Road (stay inside the guardrails on Route 26).

This leads to the trail on the Gateway of the Mahoosuc Land Trust. It is hard-packed gravel and offers beautiful views to the mountains.

I am sure many of you recognize this scene as you drive by. Those are interpretive signs that depict the mountains that you see from this vantage point.

Thanks to the Mahoosuc Land Trust, for the signs and to the hard working volunteers for trimming this iconic apple tree and giving it new life.

Also thank you for mowing areas of the land. It looks so inviting!

As you walk toward the end of this spur where you can turn around and retrace your steps you will see and hear an abundance of birds. The sound of distant traffic is amazingly subtle and I can guarantee that you will feel rejuvenated. Exercise and Nature right at your doorstep!

Inside fun and social time continues each Thursday afternoon, 12:00-2:00 pm, at the Whitman Memorial Library in Bryant Pond. Local folks and visitors from out of town are welcome. Please join us!

This question prompted me to write:

“It takes a village” is more than a well-known phrase meant to inspire people to nurture the youngest in our midst. For me, it translates to taking care of the physical, social, emotional, and mental well-being of all our citizens, of all ages. Those few simple words urge us to action. Your Bethel Area Age-Friendly Initiative (AFCI) is in motion, taking actions daily, to improve our communities as we focus on serving our older population.

I often think of past generations and our present older folks. While some of us may harbor negative feelings from past experiences and relationships, I think everyone can recall at least one grandparent, parent, teacher, or “auntie” of whom they have fond memories. We benefited from their care as they dedicated themselves to us and our families, nurturing us through childhood and, often, far into adulthood. I reflect about these folks, the challenges they faced and overcame, sometimes against unimaginable odds. Surely their griefs and successes paved the way to now possessing the wisdom we seek. They are the keepers of tradition, advisors and mentors who teach younger generations. They certainly deserve our respect and care.

Yes, older folks move slower; sight and hearing may have diminished. Memory lapses are common. Frustration and worry over illnesses, injuries might show itself with impatience and irritability. Grief in the loss of a life partner manifests as withdrawal and depression. Not to mention the challenges of downsizing, living on a fixed income, forced driving cessation and the ever-changing technology. Phew! However, I remind myself that there is still a young man or woman living in that aging body. Hopes, dreams, and personal goals may have changed, but just as in youth, aspirations motivate people to fully engage, as much as possible, in life.

“Old Age is Not for Sissies” was printed on a plaque I would read when I was a young woman. I had no idea just what that meant. Now that I am in my mid-70s, I better understand the truth in that pithy statement.

I would encourage readers to look at their older neighbors differently. Get to know them. Help to break down stereotypes that plague our society. Do as I have tried to do, break old habits. I started with myself, learning about ageism. Ageism is so ingrained and accepted in our daily lives that someone must consciously strive to eliminate it. I try to be aware when my speech or attitude is detrimental to myself and my peers.

Get involved with AFCI. Volunteer. Would you like to be a volunteer driver; take someone to a doctor’s appointment, grocery store, library, hair appointment? You can sign up for either an occasional or regularly scheduled task. Or for just one function or event. We can help you find a “good fit.”

Be a part of “the village.” You are needed, welcomed and encouraged to make a difference, either through AFCI or independently. Spread good cheer and care. Show others by your example. Call an older person for a quick chat, stop in with a baked good or simple meal. Or sit and just listen. Offer to clear snow from steps. Local music programs and historical societies have free presentations; offer to take someone. The local movie theater has a great variety of movies, some matinees offering subtitles and lower volume. Be creative.

May 2, Jane’s Walk, Saturday, at Noon “Along the Andro: History and Habitat in Our Community.” Meet at Davis Park, Bethel with Will Chapman of the Museums of the Bethel Historical Society and an ecologist from the Mahoosuc Land Trust to explore the history and ecology of the Androscoggin River, including indigenous people, the importance of the river to agriculture and early industries, the pollution of the river and subsequent efforts to clean it up, river ferries, bridges, floods, and the flora and fauna of the riverside. This program is part of Jane’s Walk, a global festival of free, volunteer-led walking conversations inspired by community activist Jane Jacobs. Jane’s Walks combine the simple act of exploring a place with personal observations, local history, and civic engagement.

Western Maine Hikes for All Ages

Announcing Western Maine Hikes for All Ages, a new collaboration of several individuals from the region!

This intergenerational program is designed to encourage and support people to get outside and walk or hike on a regular basis.

There is a variety of times, locations, and skill levels offered Monday through Friday. We are looking for more volunteers to be Greeters for a walk/hike.

Note: Be prepared for walking/hiking conditions, including appropriate footwear, clothing, water, and a snack. Participants knowingly assume risks, both known and unknown, associated with hiking.

The schedule will be posted on The Bethel Outing Club (BOC) and Bethel Fun for Kids Facebook Pages.

(The BOC FB page will be the first place people should check for any updates and changes.)

I hope you have been enjoying the brighter days of some sunshine. As I mentioned last week, I love having my yard and gardens prepped so that I can relax and enjoy them through the summer and fall. I know many of you feel the same way; dreaming of the beauty and enjoyment of these milder seasons after this past long, cold winter.

I have been trying to get out and rake leaves. Even in the middle of some recent snow flurries! Loading the wheelbarrow and dumping the leaves in the woods involves lot of bending and stretching. Great exercise, but I will admit, I am feeling a little lame.

We have a big yard, and at 74 years old, I am pleased that I can still do these chores. However, I remind myself often that I might eventually need the help of our Handy Neighbor Program that I wrote about last week.

If you feel the burden of not being able to tackle some yard work, please consider asking for help. The students at Telstar team up with adult volunteers and spread out to our area towns to do the work for you. They are amazing willing workers and accomplish so much in two days. (Of course, we all remember when being outside with our friends was better than sitting in a classroom.)

Each day, AFCI is pleased to show appreciation to all these hard workers. Pizza, snacks and a BIG THANKS greet them when they return to school. They look tired, maybe a little dirty, but with wide smiles because they know they have accomplished so much for area folks.

Importantly, this Students’ Days of Service allows teens to earn school credits while also serving and getting to know their neighbors. Sometime the residents like to work alongside the students and volunteers.

Speaking of Tools and Help for our older citizens…...

I wanted to share with you that our Bethel Area Age-Friendly Community Initiative (AFCI) is offering free technical tools that can assist you in everyday tasks. As the AFCI Community Connector, one of my goals in writing this column is to keep you informed of opportunities that can help you age in place, living comfortably in your own home, near family and friends. The University of Maine Center on Aging/Lifelong Maine provides Alexa-Echo-Dots and Smart Plugs, technological assistive devices for our older citizens. This outstanding U of M department, along with our local AFCI board, supports my work as the Community Connector.

Alexa-Echo-Dot and Smart Plugs are like having a virtual assistant to make life easier, safer and more enjoyable for you. A knowledgeable volunteer will set up the devices in your home.

You probably have already heard of, or used, the popular Alexa. With Alexa Dot you can easily speak to Alexa to call non-emergency medical services and offices, family members, and friends. You can request weather details or listen to your favorite music or literature. Or if you are feeling a little lonely, you can ask questions and start a conversation. The Echo Dot can also be programmed with a regular daily routine with reminders to take medications, attend appointments, add to your grocery shopping list.

Make sure to watch the video (link below) of how residents of Saco, Maine are helped by using their Alexa Echo Dot and Smart Plug.

The Smart Plug is placed in a regular outlet and programmed with the Alexa-Echo-Dot to turn on and off a light. You just speak to Alexa. ” Please turn on the light.” For example, if you must walk across a dark room to switch on your bedside light, asking Alexa to turn the light on first can help to prevent a fall. A simple solution to stay safe.

As I sit writing today and see the puddles of water, I am reminded that it was just last year when many of us experienced the effects of the drought in our area. At my home in Bethel we have a dug well and were forced to be mindful of taking short showers and limiting our clothes washing to one load a day. By the end of July, I had to give up on watering my lovely gardens. I had enough water stored in rain barrels to pour on the saddest of my plants. But alas, even that ran out. Poor plants, I felt very badly seeing how thirsty they were. Being a baby boomer, we may have had an abundance of resources and opportunities while growing up. But our parents and grandparents often reminded us that they lived through the depression and/or war years. They continued to demonstrate by example and to teach us how to be resourceful. (Just in case the need arose.) Some people call it “Yankee ingenuity” but I think it is practiced throughout the world. I try to apply these thrifty principles but am not always successful. Can you think of a few specific ways you practice resourcefulness that are unique to your family or living situation? So, while I am careful with my resources, I feel that I live each day with abundance. I hope you all experience the same, even if in different ways than me. I am very thankful for this sense of having plenty, and the life skills and values taught by my parents and grandparents.

Speaking of abundance, today 4/15/26 is the last day of our “Soup’s On for Seniors.”

This FREE lunch-time meal is held the 3^rd Wednesday of the month, November-April. Bonnie Pooley, a driving force in the Bethel Food Connection group, was inspired to collaborate with Linda Howe, a lay leader at the Bethel Methodist Church. The vision: seniors gathering for hearty, nutritious soups and breads while sharing conversations around long tables. Provide support to older people during the long and often dreary, isolating months of the winter.

What could be better than a shared meal, including hot drinks and desserts? It gets even better! Old acquaintances and friendships are renewed while new ones are forged. Locals and visitors are equally welcomed. Our community is strengthened—physically, mentally and socially. Just one example of “it takes a village” as all the food is donated by volunteer cooks. And we have the best cooks in Western Maine living amongst us! Thank you to the many volunteers and supporters. We see you!

Another demonstration of living in an age-friendly community is the upcoming AFCI Handy Neighbors program. Many of you have already benefited from this collaboration with SAD 44, the Northstar program, and AFCI. Telstar High School students and adult volunteers provide FREE yard clean up: leaf raking, removal of debris, stacking wood. Chores that are too much for us to handle alone. Each Fall and Spring students earn service credits while also getting to know their neighbors. To request this service please call the AFCI number 207-824-4444 and leave your name, telephone number, and request. Someone will return your call. The work dates are May 7 and 8, Thursday and Friday.

We certainly appreciate Gould Academy for the use of the gym. Staying active and fit, getting outside for that needed fresh air and sunshine, is a challenge right now. But we need to stay optimistic as we know better weather is coming soon.

Many people who walk the gym have expressed a desire to keep the momentum going. They especially like staying fit and socializing at the same time. All are eager to be outside in our beautiful natural setting. I imagine many of you readers feel the same way!

If you do enjoy walking and being outside, please know that AFCI is partnering with other groups and making plans so that walking and hiking can be a regular feature of your healthy living. The planning committee’s consensus is that opportunities to walk or hike together should be intergenerational and accessible to all abilities. The details are being hammered out and there will be specific news in the next few weeks. If you would like to be involved or volunteer your services, we welcome your input.

AFCI serves folks 60+. However, when we partner with other community groups, we can offer services to all ages. One of our newest partnerships is with the Bethel Rotary Club. Together, we maintain a Free Medical Equipment Lending Closet.
