The weather on this Sunday the 12th is beautiful and sunny, although a bit chilly. Time for some of those outside chores that have been waiting. It seems like the upcoming week looks a little unsettled with some showers predicted.

The hens have had their coop spring cleaned...I just wish I had time to do my “coop”! Hopefully in good time.

I was able to attend the visitation for Maureen Swain this past weekend. Although I only met her a handful of times, I got to know her by the stories told by her loved ones. There was a wonderful slide show with pictures of her throughout her life. It was lovely.

Claire Sessions again came through with some information from the Rec. Committee:

We have now placed a net, four paddles, and some balls at the outside pickleball court. The equipment is stored in the large black box located on the court and is available to anyone at any time, weather permitting.

We ask, if you have never put together the net, to reach out to any Rec. Committee member via the Messenger app on Facebook for a short tutorial. Once you see it done, it will be easy to do. It can be a bit confusing when you first look inside the carrying bag.

Also, please make sure you return the equipment to the box as you found it. Should there be an issue with any of the equipment, please reach out to us so that we can fix it and ensure everything is ready for the next set of players.

Inside Pickleball at the school will continue for a few more weeks.

The Rec. Committee is in conjunction with the Andover Common Folk. On “Green-Up Day,” Saturday, May 2nd, 2026 starting at 10:00am, we are inviting the community to come and help us clean up the Common from the winter debris. We need folks with rakes, shovels for the acorns and disposable, biodegradable containers to put them in. Sturdy, reasonably sized cardboard boxes would be appropriate.

The Common is at the heart of our community, where many fine events happen, bringing everyone together to enjoy the space. Let’s help out our Town Crew by getting the Common ready for our upcoming Concert Series and Andover Old Home Days—”Many hands make light work.”

The town of Andover never ceases to amaze me. I am sure that there will be a great turn out for this clean-up day. If anyone has a student that needs community service hours’ I believe that this is an awesome opportunity. If time permits I hope to lend a hand as well. Many people enjoy the town common for all sorts of events. It truly is the heart of our town.

The Andover Historical Society is in works to have a new Andover blanket available for purchase in the near future. The new design is at the weavers! Quite a few years back these were for sale and were snatched up quite quickly. I’m very excited for this new design to be available. It again has the Andover Earth Station (The Site, The Bubble etc.) on it where my dad worked for many many years. I have no doubt it will be very popular for those that live in Andover and for those family members and loved ones that have moved away.

The blankets will be 52x64 and have no fringe this time as the other one had. Once they know the cost they will begin taking prepaid orders. The AHS also hopes to have some available for Andover Old Home Days. These would make great holiday gifts! Please stay tuned for more details on these.

The Historical Society has, in its possession, a very large and very heavy safe in the basement that is taking up valuable storage space. If you, or anyone you know, recycles scrap metal, they would love to talk to you. You would need to have the appropriate equipment capable of safely removing the safe and liability insurance. Mark your calendars for the ever popular Annual Birthday Supper. This will be held at the Andover Congregational Church on April 25th at 5 pm. The menu this year consists of shepherd’s pie, cole slaw, homemade rolls and of course...the most delicious fancy birthday cakes. The cost is by donation.

My predecessor Jane Rich knew all the history of this annual gathering. It has been going on for decades. I believe that the only time it was canceled was during the war because of the food rationing. If I can find the history on it I will try and write about it in a future column. In the Town of Bethel the second quarter real estate tax bill is due on Friday, April 24th at the town hall. There are no reminders sent out so folks have to remember on their own accord. As the saying goes...Death and Taxes. You cannot avoid it.

Next Saturday, April 25th, there will be a church supper at the Methodist Church on Main Street from 4:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. This supper will have an Italian theme on the menu. Funds raised from this supper will be going into the capital account to help with efforts for a new church roof. After the supper starts at 6:30 p.m. there will be a guest speaker. “My Story” by Al Falster will be a first-hand account on how he came to America as an immigrant to become a U.S. citizen. His story will give us hope and show us what it takes to immigrate and especially why.

Another event on Saturday, April 25^th, from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. is an inside yard sale at the Congregational Church on Church Street. Funds raised from this sale go into the Smile Fund which is ministry work to help community members who need assistance to purchase dentures. This is a much needed program that can be a game changer for an individual. Community support for this program would be appreciated very much.

On Saturday, May 2nd, at noon there will be an informative walk beside the Androscoggin River with Will Chapman of the Museums of the Bethel Historical Society and an ecologist from the Mahoosuc Land Trust, called “Along the Andro: History and Habitat in Our Community.” Meet at Davis Park at noon to explore the history and ecology of the Androscoggin River, including indigenous people, the importance of the river to agriculture and early industries, the pollution of the river and subsequent efforts to clean it up, river ferries, bridges, floods, and the flora and fauna of the riverside. This program is part of Jane’s Walk, a global festival of free, volunteer-led walking conversations inspired by community activist Jane Jacobs. Jane’s Walks combine the simple act of exploring a place with personal observations, local history, and civic engagement. Click here for more details.

On Tuesday, April 14^th, was the Neighbors Feeding Neighbors event at the Methodist Church. This event has turned into a community effort in a variety of ways. To start with, the team that plans the meal knows how to cook! The meal on the 14th was a turkey dinner with turkey, gravy, stuffing, mashed potatoes, squash, and green bean casserole as well as a veggie platter, fruit platter and a bowl of fresh fruit.

There were a variety of folks who showed up at this free meal—young families with small children and locals of different ages.

The intent of Neighbors Feeding Neighbors is two-fold. One purpose is to bring community together to share food and feed one another. Second, is to bring attention to our local Food Pantry. Folks coming may bring non-perishable items which are transported over to the Food Pantry, which is near Telstar High School. Donations are always accepted with gratitude.

The next Neighbors Feeding Neighbors will take place on Tuesday, May 12th (always the second Tuesday of the month), and I am hearing talk of grilling outside now that the weather is warmer.

Wednesday, April 15^th, was the last Soup’s On! for the 25/26 season. The next Soup’s On! will be on October 14th. As always there were some amazing soups. The shrimp bisque seems to be a big hit. Many fine soups for folks to enjoy. Not to be outdone, the desserts were excellent as well. Maryvonne Wheeler made these coconut chocolate chip squares that didn’t last long. What has always impressed me with this event is seeing the true nature of folks wanting to share their soup or deserts with others. We were expecting 7 soups but ended up with 10 soups! There never is a shortage of food, with the excess packaged up and delivered to senior citizen homes. Soup is certainly on and what a blessing it has been to many.

This month seems to be just flying by. It must be because all the wonderful events happening have been keeping us busy.

At the last Bethel Seniors Group meeting, the students from the Culinary Arts of Region 9 served us a three-course meal again. It was absolutely amazing and delicious. Therefore, I was so happy to see that our local Watershed Wood-Fired Kitchen is having a fundraiser/benefit dinner for our Telstar sophomore Henry Perks to travel to France to further his culinary career at the Le Cordon Bleu. On April 26th the Watershed Wood-Fired Kitchen will turn into a French Bistro from 5:30 till 7 in support of Henry. Please, if you can, support this young man. At the same meeting, Lyndsey Smith talked to us about the North Star Program. We, residents at the Bethel House Senior Housing, are proud to help some by donating all our returnables to this wonderful program which helps so many of our local youngsters. Through this program they also do a lot of community service.

I was recently told that I cannot keep my small charcoal grill here at the apartment complex anymore, sigh. Old school as I am, can’t get myself to put it in the dumpster. Let me know if you would like it....first come basis,

Sunday was a very nice day. The thermometer hit 62 degrees around 1:00pm and by 5:00pm, it said 55 degrees.

There are a few Happy Birthday wishes to go out this week. My husband, Hugh Chapman and our daughter-in-law, Kym Chapman (Chris’ wife) share a birthday on April 22^nd, and Jason Steigerwald, our granddaughter Mariyah’s husband, has one on April 20^th. Also, anniversary wishes to our son and wife, Tim and Michele Chapman. on April 18th.

Judy Bishop, from Yarmouth, ME, stopped by last Saturday for a visit. She was in West Bethel to attend the funeral service for Maureen Swain and decided to stop by here to say hello. She had a chance to visit after the service with a few relatives that were in attendance.

Hugh stopped by Pete and Claudia Risbara’s the other day. He was gifted some of Pete’s maple syrup that he has been making. Claudia also sent home some delicious cookies that she had just baked.

Again, not too much to report on the bird feeder. The hawk is still visiting and bothering the other birds. There were several Red-winged Blackbirds and Grackles out there over the weekend.

I found this newspaper clipping that my mother, Millie McLain, had saved along with a few others. This is just a little excerpt from it-

“When the first three months of a year have plodded through their days, and a man tears the third sheet from the big Feed Store calendar on the kitchen wall, he knows that true spring is still some distance away. April is a heady filly, not broken to the harness. There are periods when the Weather Man cannot make up his mind, and blue skies and dark clouds take turns as the hours pass. But each day means one day nearer to the time when true spring will come. You can feel, smell and hear the voice of change, and the heart responds when eyes and ears see and hear the SIGNS. The banks of the creeks begin to show green and the red maples’ blossoms are bright pennants in the woods.

Then comes the morning when a man is certain. On the way to the barn to do the chores, he stops in the yard and savors the day. The sun is a golden platter in a blue sky; mountains are blue-green against the horizon; the bluebirds and robins are giving their morning concert. The air is soft against one’s face and the smell of warming earth is heady in the nostrils. A man breathes deeply and inhales the fragrance of a new season. Suddenly, he knows. The winter was challenging for the people in Hastings, but the spring brought a whole new set of problems. The maintenance of the railroad and bridges was a constant challenge. The water coming from the melting snow and spring storms rushed down the mountain side and washed out the railroad and bridges causing a lot of damage. Bridges over the river had to be rebuilt after each storm or replaced completely.

Today is feeling very “Springish.” April Showers are promised for the next week. However, we need to keep a spring in our steps as there are many wonderful things to look forward to in the next few months. I love to get out in my yard to rake and add to my gardens. I just know we will have family and friend gatherings and want everything spiffed up and welcoming. I always feel a sense of accomplishment after all the hard work and then feel that I can relax and enjoy company. We have two children, 12 grandchildren and two great grandchildren. Those visits are what I am particularly envisioning. What are some things you are planning and dreaming about participating in during the Spring and Summer? I find that being a grandparent or grandfriend is an especially fun and rewarding relationship.

As I sit writing today and see the puddles of water, I am reminded that it was just last year when many of us experienced the effects of the drought in our area. At my home in Bethel we have a dug well and were forced to be mindful of taking short showers and limiting our clothes washing to one load a day. By the end of July, I had to give up on watering my lovely gardens. I had enough water stored in rain barrels to pour on the saddest of my plants. But alas, even that ran out. Poor plants, I felt very badly seeing how thirsty they were. Being a baby boomer, we may have had an abundance of resources and opportunities while growing up. But our parents and grandparents often reminded us that they lived through the depression and/or war years. They continued to demonstrate by example and to teach us how to be resourceful. (Just in case the need arose.) Some people call it “Yankee ingenuity” but I think it is practiced throughout the world. I try to apply these thrifty principles but am not always successful. Can you think of a few specific ways you practice resourcefulness that are unique to your family or living situation? So, while I am careful with my resources, I feel that I live each day with abundance. I hope you all experience the same, even if in different ways than me. I am very thankful for this sense of having plenty, and the life skills and values taught by my parents and grandparents.

Speaking of abundance, today 4/15/26 is the last day of our “Soup’s On for Seniors.”

This FREE lunch-time meal is held the 3^rd Wednesday of the month, November-April. Bonnie Pooley, a driving force in the Bethel Food Connection group, was inspired to collaborate with Linda Howe, a lay leader at the Bethel Methodist Church. The vision: seniors gathering for hearty, nutritious soups and breads while sharing conversations around long tables. Provide support to older people during the long and often dreary, isolating months of the winter.

What could be better than a shared meal, including hot drinks and desserts? It gets even better! Old acquaintances and friendships are renewed while new ones are forged. Locals and visitors are equally welcomed. Our community is strengthened—physically, mentally and socially. Just one example of “it takes a village” as all the food is donated by volunteer cooks. And we have the best cooks in Western Maine living amongst us! Thank you to the many volunteers and supporters. We see you!

Another demonstration of living in an age-friendly community is the upcoming AFCI Handy Neighbors program. Many of you have already benefited from this collaboration with SAD 44, the Northstar program, and AFCI. Telstar High School students and adult volunteers provide FREE yard clean up: leaf raking, removal of debris, stacking wood. Chores that are too much for us to handle alone. Each Fall and Spring students earn service credits while also getting to know their neighbors. To request this service please call the AFCI number 207-824-4444 and leave your name, telephone number, and request. Someone will return your call. The work dates are May 7 and 8, Thursday and Friday.

I just know that everyone who reads this column is looking for puppy updates and photos. Lena is growing like a weed! She weighed around 7.5 pounds when she came home, and I’ll be interested to see how much she weighs at her vet appointment next week, when she’ll get a full going-over and her second set of puppy shots. She’s definitely gotten bigger, and looks more like an actual dog than a roly-poly guinea pig now.

On Tuesday, April 14^th, was the Neighbors Feeding Neighbors event at the Methodist Church. This event has turned into a community effort in a variety of ways. To start with, the team that plans the meal knows how to cook! The meal on the 14th was a turkey dinner with turkey, gravy, stuffing, mashed potatoes, squash, and green bean casserole as well as a veggie platter, fruit platter and a bowl of fresh fruit.

There were a variety of folks who showed up at this free meal—young families with small children and locals of different ages.

The intent of Neighbors Feeding Neighbors is two-fold. One purpose is to bring community together to share food and feed one another. Second, is to bring attention to our local Food Pantry. Folks coming may bring non-perishable items which are transported over to the Food Pantry, which is near Telstar High School. Donations are always accepted with gratitude.

The next Neighbors Feeding Neighbors will take place on Tuesday, May 12th (always the second Tuesday of the month), and I am hearing talk of grilling outside now that the weather is warmer.

Wednesday, April 15^th, was the last Soup’s On! for the 25/26 season. The next Soup’s On! will be on October 14th. As always there were some amazing soups. The shrimp bisque seems to be a big hit. Many fine soups for folks to enjoy. Not to be outdone, the desserts were excellent as well. Maryvonne Wheeler made these coconut chocolate chip squares that didn’t last long. What has always impressed me with this event is seeing the true nature of folks wanting to share their soup or deserts with others. We were expecting 7 soups but ended up with 10 soups! There never is a shortage of food, with the excess packaged up and delivered to senior citizen homes. Soup is certainly on and what a blessing it has been to many.

At the last Bethel Seniors Group meeting, the students from the Culinary Arts of Region 9 served us a three-course meal again. It was absolutely amazing and delicious. Therefore, I was so happy to see that our local Watershed Wood-Fired Kitchen is having a fundraiser/benefit dinner for our Telstar sophomore Henry Perks to travel to France to further his culinary career at the Le Cordon Bleu. On April 26th the Watershed Wood-Fired Kitchen will turn into a French Bistro from 5:30 till 7 in support of Henry. Please, if you can, support this young man. At the same meeting, Lyndsey Smith talked to us about the North Star Program. We, residents at the Bethel House Senior Housing, are proud to help some by donating all our returnables to this wonderful program which helps so many of our local youngsters. Through this program they also do a lot of community service.

I was recently told that I cannot keep my small charcoal grill here at the apartment complex anymore, sigh. Old school as I am, can’t get myself to put it in the dumpster. Let me know if you would like it....first come basis,

I could have happily lived without Tuesday’s inch or so of wet snow, but that’s April for you. I looked back through old photos of past springs and found evidence of quite a few years with fairly significant accumulations of April snow, including this photo taken on April 28, 2010.

When I took new puppy Lena out before bedtime on Tuesday evening, she seemed very surprised to find snow on the ground. She wanted to run around and play in it, while the last thing I wanted was for her to get all wound up right before bed. But maybe the snow was actually a puppy miracle, because it turned out to be the first night since we brought her home that she slept through the night without getting me up to take her out once or twice. (Or three or four times.) I can’t remember how long it takes before puppies sleep through the night, but it can’t come soon enough!

Because it will be a long time before Lena is able to hike with me on her own—veterinarians don’t recommend taking puppies on anything but very short, easy hikes until their growth plates have fully closed, which for Labs isn’t until around 14 months—I’ve acquired two different carriers to see if I can figure out a way to bring her along. The first, a backpack made for carrying dogs up to 40 pounds, is still way too big for her, but the second, a cross-body sling type carrier made for puppies and small dogs, shows some promise. It arrived on Monday afternoon and we tried it out with a ten-minute walk around the yard.

Today, Thursday, April 9, from 4 to 5:30 p.m. at the West Parish Congregational Church in Bethel: “Meditation and Music,” a unique, interactive health/wellness program presented by To Your Health. Mindfulness meditation practitioner Will Chapman will discuss the benefits of meditation, lead the group in a short, guided practice, and take questions from the audience. Then, the Oxford Hills Ukulele Group (OHUG), led by Lynette and Ray Seames, will perform their favorite tunes and lead the audience in a singalong. To Your Health, in collaboration with Western Mountains Senior College, the Bethel Family Health Center, and MSAD #44 Adult Education, provides free health education and wellness programs to the Bethel area communities.

Wednesday, April 15, from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. and Thursday, April 16, from 12 to 5 p.m.: Third Annual Spring Fling at the Bethel Library. Come to the library to enjoy light refreshments, browse the bookshelves, visit with library staff, board members, and friends, and purchase raffle tickets. Saturday, May 2, in several area towns: Green-Up Day, annual roadside clean-up. Greenwood volunteers will meet at the Legion/Town Office parking lot for road assignments at 9 a.m. Trash bags and disposable gloves are provided. If you choose to do clean-up on Greenwood roads prior to May 2, please email Lynn Cobb (cobblynn12@gmail.com) or let the town office know, so they will know which sections have already been completed before making road assignments.

There is a free year-long program starting up on April 21 at the Bethel United Methodist Church. Called “Food Is Medicine,” it is designed for people who are at risk for Type 2 diabetes, and who have limited access to affordable, healthy foods. See the details in the flyer below.

Last Saturday afternoon I traveled to Unity, where I had the privilege of helping to celebrate the 100^th birthday of former East Bethel farm girl Deborah (Farwell) Eldredge. Debbie is my second cousin, once removed (my dad’s second cousin) and she and her three sons were frequent visitors to our camp in the summers when I was growing up. I was accompanied by my brother Steve, our sister Leslie, and Marta Clements, whose sister-in-law was a close friend of Debbie’s from college. It was a wonderful celebration, and I’m sure Debbie is enjoying reading all of the cards, poems, and stories she received from the many folks who attended.

April started off with new baby calves on the 2^nd and the 4^th. Thankfully everything went well. Even though we had rain and it was a bit messy, both mommas have been doing great and staying dry in the sheds. They sure are cute. It is one of my favorite times of the year and my camera sure gets a work out between new babies and flowers springing out of the ground. My tulips and daffodils are popping out of the ground and I can’t wait to see some color outside.

Saturday, we ventured to Lewiston for a birthday party at the trampoline park. All the kids had a great time and were able to burn off a bunch of energy which was nice. We’ve had birthday parties the last 3 weekends but I think we get a break next weekend.

I decided to host Easter Sunday lunch at our house. It consisted of ham, mashed potatoes, peas, squash, green beans, homemade rolls and pineapple upside down cake. I know my grandmother, dad, and mother-in-law are all smiling down on us getting together and sharing stories. We sure do miss all of them but they will never be forgotten.

The Comprehensive Plan Committee met on Monday and reviewed the Housing chapter and summary of the Economy chapter. Erica and Ethan from AVCOG are helping put together the chapters with feedback from the committee. They both bring so much excitement and really make the process easy.

A public hearing was held at the Town Office on Tuesday regarding changes to the Unified Development Review Ordinance that will be voted on at Town Meeting on May 12^th at the Grange Hall at 6pm. For more information, visit the town’s website newrymaine.org.

While this hearing and Select Board meeting were taking place, Beauty decided on this snowy day she would bring a bull into this world. That makes number 3. We’re waiting on one more and then a short break before the next bunch arrives.

Paris Public Library in South Paris and Whitman Memorial Library in Bryant Pond are pleased to co-sponsor a community presentation by Rivera Sun, well-known author of the Ari Ara series.

The event, funded by a private donation, will happen on May 9^th at 1 PM at the Deering Community Center in South Paris (across the street from The Square restaurant and next to the Paris Public Library - in the former Methodist Church). There is no cost to attend and members of surrounding communities are welcome.

Rivera Sun’s books blend action and adventure with the skills of conflict resolution, anti-bullying, and ending violence. They are enjoyed by readers of all ages – from young students to older adults - and will claim a spot on your bookshelf and a place in your heart. Program attendees will have the chance to win a complete set of the popular Ari Ara series signed by the author.

I had breakfast with Kathleen DeVore last Friday, our usual day to meet at The Hub. I’m so happy to have this spot close by. Kathleen and I have been meeting for breakfast every month for over a year now. It’s truly great to visit, and get caught up on what’s happening. We also got a look at artwork by Hunter Verrill, which is awesome.

On Saturday I went to hear Graham Platner at the Gem in Bethel. There was a large crowd and he was well received.

The Locke Mills Union Church hosted a Maundy Thursday service last week, followed by a pot luck meal. It was delicious, and there were only eight of us there! The next day was a Good Friday service, and then on Easter, a sunrise service followed by breakfast. Regular service was at 9:30. We are still meeting in the Sunday School room to save on heat.

West Paris news—

Coming right up-this Saturday, April 11, there will be a meet and greet for artist Shelly Shibles at the West Paris library at 3:00. Come and meet the artist and view her artwork. Refreshments will be served.

Jeff Holley is organizing a group of people to bring back Old Home Days in West Paris. This will be on Saturday, June 13. Volunteers are wanted and needed.

On my birthday, I went to Chris Cole’s for freshly made popovers. It was a really nice gathering, with Barb Russell, Lainey Cross, my sister Susan, Kathy Bennett, Chris and I. We sat for three hours, yapping away and eating two rounds of popovers! The rest of my day was very uneventful. More celebrating is planned for later this week.

We have been busy this week with the “Walk the Gym” program. Located at the Gould Fieldhouse, we will continue through the end of April. Tuesdays and Thursdays 1:00-2:00 P.M. And it is a good thing! There were folks attending yesterday as we experienced snow flurries throughout the afternoon.

We certainly appreciate Gould Academy for the use of the gym. Staying active and fit, getting outside for that needed fresh air and sunshine, is a challenge right now. But we need to stay optimistic as we know better weather is coming soon.

Many people who walk the gym have expressed a desire to keep the momentum going. They especially like staying fit and socializing at the same time. All are eager to be outside in our beautiful natural setting. I imagine many of you readers feel the same way!

If you do enjoy walking and being outside, please know that AFCI is partnering with other groups and making plans so that walking and hiking can be a regular feature of your healthy living. The planning committee’s consensus is that opportunities to walk or hike together should be intergenerational and accessible to all abilities. The details are being hammered out and there will be specific news in the next few weeks. If you would like to be involved or volunteer your services, we welcome your input.

I hope you all had a wonderful Easter. The Mills Market Annual Easter Egg Hunt was well attended and there was some beautiful weather to boot.

On Easter Sunday I entertained 5 people (myself included). I had my hubby, my dad, my son and his girlfriend. My brother-in-law was under the weather and unfortunately couldn’t make it.

I cooked my spiral ham in my crock pot this year with the spices that came with it, maple syrup from Swain’s Farm and apple juice...delicious! Along with mashed potatoes, green bean casserole, honey glazed carrots and rolls. For dessert there was a choice of pineapple upside down cake (my mom’s recipe) or lemon cheesecake squares. Needless to say no one left the table hungry!

I was accompanied by my brother Steve, our sister Leslie, and Marta Clements, whose sister-in-law was a close friend of Debbie’s from college. It was a wonderful celebration, and I’m sure Debbie is enjoying reading all of the cards, poems, and stories she received from the many folks who attended.

Sunday—The sun decided to shine and the temperature got up to 41 around 11:30AM. Monday was a decent sunny day. Tuesday was rainy and miserable.

The little chipmunk that lives out in front of our house appeared even though it was rainy. He or she will wait and stare into the window until seeds are delivered to the front step. The one that lives out back of the house just shares seeds with the birds.

We had several Evening Grosbeaks at the feeder this week. The hawk showed up again for a while and scared the other birds away. There was a Cowbird spotted in with the Grackles, Starlings, and Red-Winged Blackbirds. Most mornings there is one turkey that shows up for breakfast. On Tuesday, the lawn was covered with a large group of Robins.

With the cold nights and kind of warmer days, the sap was running well. Buckets were filling up fast. Pete Risbara has been working hard boiling down the sap to make some maple syrup.

Condolences to the family of Robert Taylor, who passed away last week.

Gilead Historical Society

Hugh and I attended a meeting hosted by the Museums of the Bethel Historical Society, and facilitated by Will Chapman, that was held at the West Parish Congregational Church. The meeting was moved to accommodate all the historical organizations that responded that they would be attending. There were more than 50 people who attended and represented over 30 local history and preservation groups from western Maine and northern New Hampshire. A few people, who could not attend in person, joined remotely.

Plans were made to meet again at a later date and also to possibly have small groups that would meet to discuss certain topics and bring their ideas to that meeting. There were a lot of great ideas on how to get people involved and increase the membership.

Town of Gilead

The Annual Town meeting was held on March 28^th. According to Patsy Cox, Town Clerk, all articles passed as written. Congratulations to Sharon Leighton, who was elected to the three-year term for selectman. Sharon’s husband, Alfred, has been a selectman for many years. She has attended the meetings and become very involved in how the town is managed.

The two positions for school board members were not filled. Action to make this happen will be taken at a later date. There were fourteen registered voters that attended the meeting and six non-residents. There are 161 registered voters.

Before the business meeting began, Spencer Williams from Mahoosuc Land Trust made a presentation on the progress of the property on the North Road known as Tumbledown Dick Mountain. They are in the process of acquiring the land and have had several meetings that were attended by some residents of the town. They are planning on creating hiking trails for the public to enjoy. Spencer thanked the residents who attended the meetings and for their input on the project.

A few members of the Gilead Historical Society attended a couple of meetings. The purpose was to inform Mahoosuc Land Trust of the location of what has been known as The Three Stone Cemetery. Written material was provided and a trip to show them the location was included in one of the meetings.

It is hard to believe that April is here already. Ol’ Mother Nature has been all over the place the last few days. Really warm temps and sun and then a morning temp of 10 on Sunday the 29th.

All the snow that fell from the last storm has melted nicely from our driveway, which the chickens love! But the mud, oh my goodness the mud. I may have to give up washing my kitchen floor (thanks to Bocephus) until some time in June. It seems like we are in the midst of an unsettled weather week. Am I correct that it is April and indeed spring?

Just a reminder that the Annual Mills Market Easter Egg Hunt takes place this Saturday the 4th at 9:00 a.m. Please keep an eye out and drive carefully if you are going through the village at this time. Big thanks to the Trish Mills & Family and to all the helpers that have kept this time honored tradition going for our town.

Andover Historical Society: The annual meeting will be held on Thursday, April 9th at 6:00 p.mm at our in-town building. We would love to see some new faces, tell you all about our past year and add new members to our roster. A new book titled “The Fabric of Andover,” written by Peter Stowell, is nearing completion and we hope to have copies available for purchase at Andover Olde Home Days.

Rec. Committee: We continue to provide Pickleball play time at AES three nights a week. Tues/Thurs. Wednesdays are for those who need more practice or want to learn how to play in a slightly less challenging environment. All play starts at 6:00 p.m. and generally ends at 8:30. For those who would like to stay connected digitally, the “TeamReach” app is available for free download. We are listed as Andover, ME Pickleball. Dates and times for all play are listed along with a message board for member communication. To sign up for Team Reach, use Group code: And04216. I hope some local folks sign up and join in on the fun. The outdoor court was redone last year and will be in use this summer I have no doubt. Look here for updates.

If you happened to hear a helicopter flying around Andover on Saturday the 28th, fear not. The Andover Volunteer Fire Department would like to thank the Maine Forest Service for coming to Andover to provide some familiarization and training in Helo Ops. A few of the members got to take a ride with their outstanding crew. Great teamwork by one and all.

Another wonderful resource we have in Andover is Darlene Akers and her Dragonfly Healing Nest. Her next upcoming class is: Wild Cherry Medicine Saturday, April 11th from 1:00-3:00 p.m. at Betula Botanical Sanctuary at 4 Cardinal Way, Andover, Maine. This will be a hands on class; learn how to process the bark of Black Cherry, Prunus sertonia. We will explore the medicinal properties of the wild cherry tree. We will also play with rooting some branches. Energy Exchange: $30 You will go home with the bark that you process and cuttings to root. What to bring: A knife to process bark, a water bottle, a journal/pen and comfortable clothing to be outside. The Andover Snow Valley Sno-goers will be holding their season end meeting and election of officers on Saturday, April 11th. This will take place at the Andover Town Hall from 5-8 p.m. There will be a pizza supper from 5-6:30, then from 6:30-8 an end of year recap and highlights. Also an election of officers for the 2026/2027 season. All are welcome to attend. For more info please call (207) 233-0468.

A reminder from the Town office: Dogs must be registered in the town where they live, with proof of rabies vaccination and spay/neuter certificates needed to complete the registration. Registration fees support local Animal Control Officers, rabies control, and animal welfare investigations. Dogs residing in Andover are registered at the Town Office. The annual fee for licensing (male or female) is $6.00 for neutered/spayed and $13 for all others. Failing to register a dog in Maine (by Jan 31st) results in a $25 late fee per dog. It is a civil violation that can lead to a court summons and fines of up to $100. For dangerous dogs, late fees can reach $150. Licenses are required annually for dogs over 6 months old. On April 1, 2026 the Animal Control Officer will be provided a list of dogs that are not currently registered in the Town to follow up with owners.

The last Cabin Fever Reliever will be held this Saturday the 11th from 10-2 at the Andover Congregational Church. Bring any craft project to work on. Coffee and tea are provided. From what I have been told this has been a wonderful thing for folks to get out for a few hours during this past winter. I am hoping that it will return again next year.

The month of April has arrived. Spring rains. High water. Fiddleheads. Sap Season. Spring perennial flowers will be popping through the ground. April is a time of new birth. Mother Nature is waking up from her winter’s nap.

Today’s column comes out on Thursday, April 2, which is Maundy Thursday. The West Parish Congregational Church UCC in Bethel will be having a Maundy Thursday Communion and Tenebrae Service starting at 7:00 p.m. All are welcome to attend.

“Maundy” comes from a word meaning “commandment,” recalling Jesus’s words to his disciples at the Last Supper; that they love one another as he has loved them. “Tenebrae” is a Latin word meaning “darkness” or “shadows.” In this powerful service, all gather at the table to share Communion and remember Jesus’ last night with his disciples. Then the story turns toward Good Friday as the portions of the Bible story reflect on Jesus in the garden while the disciples cannot stay awake, his violent arrest, his trial, his carrying of the cross, and the events of his crucifixion.

The joyous celebration of the resurrection of Jesus Christ will take place on Sunday, April 5th. In our towns there will be many Easter Services available for folks to attend. The Methodist Church and the West Bethel Union Church have a Sunday morning 9 a.m. Service. Locke Mills Union Church offers a 9:30 a.m. service. At 10 a.m. the Congregational UCC Church, Bethel Alliance Church, and the Pleasant Valley Bible Church will hold Church services. The Bethel Church of the Nazarene holds a 10:30 a.m. service. The Catholic Church offers a Saturday 6:00 p.m. Mass for folks to attend. Many different denominations celebrating the risen Christ!

These next 3 events coming up involve food and are held in the dining room of the Methodist Church located at 79 Main Street.

On Wednesday, April 8^th, the Bethel Seniors will be meeting from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. with Region 9 technical students providing the meal. Guest speaker will be Lyndsey Smith from the North Star Program.

On Tuesday, April 14^th, from 4:30 to 6:30 p.m. is Neighbors Feeding Neighbors. This month’s meal will be chicken, stuffing and vegetables with folks bringing salad, bread and desserts. The focus for Neighbors Feeding Neighbors is to support our local Food Pantry. Non-perishable items may be brought to the Church which will be delivered to the Food Pantry. Some folks also like to make a monetary donation to help feed others in our Community. This free meal is open to everyone in our Community.

On Wednesday, April 15^th, from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. is Soup’s On! There are always new cooks coming on board so it makes for a variety and a delicious meal.

On Saturday, April 25^th, starting at 6:30 p.m. there will be a guest speaker at the Methodist Church. “My Story,” by Alexander U. Falster. Al is an American citizen but was an immigrant. The story he is going to share is his story of how he became a citizen which was not easy but it was made easier by many people, some he only met for a minute before, others he knew longer but they all had something to offer. Advice, a handshake, a kind word during the difficult years. Al was sworn in as a citizen and gave a speech for the assembled 63 other new citizens. Al will share some of those heartwarming stories, only the good and positive aspects, lest they are forgotten. He does not want to go into current situations. His story will be told without politics. His story will give hope and show others what it takes to immigrate and especially why.

Even though we live in a small town there are many among us who have a story to be told. “My Story” with Alexander is just one of many stories that folks living in our town can share that may have an impact on our lives.

There is a free year-long program starting up on April 21 at the Bethel United Methodist Church. Called “Food Is Medicine,” it is designed for people who are at risk for Type 2 diabetes, and who have limited access to affordable, healthy foods. See details in the flyer below.

“April, April, er macht grad was er will”; a German saying meaning “April, April, he does just as he pleases,” its meaning being constant changes in weather. We get that here even sooner as we have been seeing.

Easter weekend is coming up, so I included an old picture of my Mom and I on Easter morning. My older sister was there also, naturally. It was taken after we played “who can throw an egg the furthest without breaking it.” It was fun and turned the field into specks of color. My Mom wouldn’t like me showing this picture as she still had her rollers in her hair.

I think as a child I liked Easter more than Christmas. There was just nothing like searching the whole yard for eggs, chocolate bunnies, and whatever presents were hidden. Memories truly are a treasure,

The votes stopped coming in and sadly were not very numerous concerning the favorite greenhouse in the area. Hopefully in the future more folks will participate in a fun activity like this. So, Mountain Greenery came in first place with three votes, Pooh Corner Farm second place with 2 votes, Longfellow Greenhouse and Young’s received one vote each. Personally, I love to stop at each and every greenhouse anywhere.

The Whitman Memorial Library recently made a generous donation to support the efforts of the Bethel Area Age-Friendly Initiative (AFCI) . We are very honored to partner with this wonderful library in serving the needs of the greater community.

The library graciously hosts a game time for older folks each Thursday afternoon 12:00-2:00 P.M. We play a variety of card and board games along with dominoes and puzzles. You will hear much laughter and gentle teasing as we learn new skills and strategies from each other. Everyone is a winner at Games on! (This is a free program and light snacks are provided.)

Things got a lot more interesting around here on Monday morning, when Will and I went to Turner and brought home our new black Labrador puppy, Lena. Named for my Bethel grandmother, Lena Belle Farwell Wight, she’s eight weeks old, adorable, and a handful!

We couldn’t have asked for a more perfect day than Monday to bring home a new puppy. It was 60 degrees, sunny, and neither Will nor I had anything else pressing that we needed to be doing. We got to spend several hours bonding with her, much of it outside in the sunshine.
