Well, summer seems to now be upon us. Telstar High School held their graduation ceremonies last Friday evening, the 5th. Congratulations to the Class of 2026...job well done!

The fifth grade class at Andover Elementary School had their graduation ceremony on June 8th. Best of luck to them all toward their middle school journey.

The Andover Elementary School also had its last student day today (6/9). A perfectly hot day for school to have an early dismissal. Please stay extra vigilant these next few months as the kids will be out and about enjoying their summer break. SAD #44 will be released early this Friday the 12th for their summer vacation. I hope that all my school staff friends savor these beautiful summer months and take time to recuperate!

There are 3 dates in July that AES will be offering some playdates with some fun activities: School may be over for the year but AES is still a family. Come join us for Play Dates this summer! We will be making crafts, gardening, playing in the sprinkler, and baking. All products will be for sale at the AES table at Olde Home Days. All funds raised will support the Homestead Project and the AES After School Program. We welcome all children ages 4 - 12 whether they come to our school or not. Come and be part of the fun! What a great way to spend a day or two, or three this summer, even for young visitors to our area.

The Lone Mountain Campground is ready for a busy summer season. A-frame cabins #3 and #4 are under construction. They will be ready for rental by Memorial Day of 2027. The campground is holding a T-shirt design contest for America’s 250th Birthday. Deadline is tomorrow June 12th...sorry for the late info! Please see the attached picture for all the details.

The second annual craft fair will be taking place on June 20th with over 20 vendors scheduled along with a food and beverage truck in attendance. Their gorgeous pool is now open and they once again will be offering public swims Monday-Thursday for $10 per person. It seems that August is far away, however, the Andover Olde Home Days buttons are now available! You can pick yours up at Mills Market, Pete’s Hardware, and Aroma Joe’s in Bethel, with more locations coming soon. Buttons are just $1 each.

The AOHD committee is thrilled to announce this year’s grand prize, proudly donated by Clean Cut Painting. This is a truly exceptional gift: two professional painters for ten hours of labor each, plus up to $500 in materials covered. Whether you’ve been putting off a room refresh, or you have some trim that needs attention, or a bigger project in mind, this prize puts real skilled hands to work for you. All told, it’s a $2,500 value, and the committee is so very grateful for Clean Cut Painting’s generosity and support of our community. More prizes will be announced soon.

Raffles will be held at 1 PM and 2:30 PM on August 1st at the gazebo. If your number is called, you’ll need to present your winning button in person to claim your prize. These buttons usually get snapped up quite quickly so get yours soon.

I truly love attending the annual AOHD each year. Such a day of community, events, food and fun to take in. You always run into people that you don’t always get a chance to see. The committee works very hard for months to make this day amazing for everyone. Andover is a very special place and I just love that this is my hometown and that I get to reside here, the place where my heart has always called home.

The AOHD Amateur Photography Contest will be taking place again in 2026 thanks to Chad Bishop and crew. It will be held August 1st from 9 AM-1 PM downstairs at the Andover Town Hall. The six categories will be: portrait, landscape, black & white, flowers, birds/animals and the theme of this year’s AOHD, “A River Valley Playground.” There will be two age groups, adult and children, for each category. Limit of three entries per person per category. You cannot use the same photo for multiple categories. You must include your name, age group and category on each entry. Drop-off times are Wednesday, July 29^th, 12-3 PM, Thursday, July 30^th, 3-6 PM and Friday, July 31^st, 10 AM-2 PM...this day is the deadline as judging will take place. No professionals please!

I guess I need to go through some of my Ireland pictures to see if any are worthy of entering. I always try to submit some of my photos each year. I love looking at all the pictures that are submitted; there are really some talented amateur photographers out there. Please take a look through your photographs as well and c’mon up and enter them! This Friday, June 12^th, the Andover Summer Concert Series continues with the band “Drunk in Public.” It runs from 6-8 PM on the town common, rain or shine. All concerts are free with donations gladly accepted. I regretfully have other plans this weekend or I would be there in my lawn chair listening to the music. Big thanks to Pete Coolidge and his cohorts for bringing us another season of wonderful concerts.

The Andover Public Library, 46 Church Street, will be holding a few events this Saturday, June 13th. From 10 AM-1 PM will be the annual plant sale. There will be seedlings, flowers, perennials and house plants available. There will also be a tag sale taking place during those same hours. The final event of the day will be held from 2-4 PM, an Author Talk with local author Karen Swasey.

I decided to plant a “patio garden” this year. Just one Roma tomato plant and one pickling cucumber plant. They both are in plant pots on the back deck with tomato cages in place; hopefully this will deter my pets from letting their curiosity get the best of them.

My son Brandon gifted me two blueberry bushes for Mother’s Day this year. I’m hoping they will continue to grow and provide some delicious blueberries. I received a rhubarb plant from a neighbor last year and that is doing very well this year. Growing up we had two very large rhubarb patches at home. I remember my sister and I putting some sugar in a Dixie cup and each of us getting a piece of rhubarb to snack on. A dip in the sugar then a bite, a dip in the sugar and a bite and so on. Ahhh, the simple times of childhood. I hope you all have a very good week and as always, please send me any new or events.

The Bethel Senior Citizen Club held their June meeting and folks met at Kowloon Restaurant. In the summer months we gather at local restaurants to support the local businesses and we take a pause planning the monthly meals. Kowloon’s hospitality was very accommodating for us to meet and also hold a meeting. Thank you Sue and your wonderful staff!

The Club is planning a fall trip. The turkey train is being organized and planned for the month of October. More details will follow.

The Seniors are holding their July 8th meeting at Morning Glory Farm out on the flat road in Bethel. It will be a patriotic themed gathering and everyone is looking forward to visiting one of our local farms. Museums of the Bethel Historical Society Executive Director Will Chapman will tell us about past centennial celebrations in Bethel and special exhibits and programs being held at the historical society this year to commemorate America’s 250^th birthday.

This Senior Club, which began in 1962, welcomes Seniors to join its membership. Club dues are $10.00 for the year. All are welcome!

The June gathering for Neighbors Feeding Neighbors was a hit! In recognition of the upcoming Juneteenth federal holiday, Donald Coverdale prepared ribs, fried chicken, and potato salad, which were delicious.

The Bethel Library also provided books which were very helpful educating people on the topic of slavery. This monthly community event is growing and everyone is welcome to come and enjoy the food and get to know your neighbors.

It was nice to see many familiar faces at the Bethel Library Plant Sale. Both my daughter and I found some nice plants again. I keep hoping to see a bay leaf plant again.

Eva and John Coolidge will celebrate their anniversary on June 22. Happy Anniversary from the whole neighborhood, Eva and John.

Those of you who know Jane Hathaway, please wish her a speedy recovery for her most recent hip replacement.

It has been nice to have a few days of bright sunshine and 80 degrees. The breeze coming in the open windows is refreshing and keeps the house from getting too warm.

Not much to report on the bird population around here. The Catbirds are still around. We know where the nest is but do not know if they have any family yet because we do not want to disturb them. We have been noticing quite a few Swallowtail Butterflies. Claudia Risbara took a picture of a swarm of them when she was taking a walk. The shadows on the ground make it a little hard to see some of them, but thought it was interesting.

Hugh and I took a ride last Tuesday on Rt. 113 up to Hastings Campground. Besides the host, there were only a couple of campsites that were occupied but several had reserved signs on them for the weekend.

There are a couple of trees beside Route 2 across from the town buildings. The Town mows this area to keep things looking nice between Route 2 and the railroad tracks. A branch from one of the trees broke off over the weekend, so Ivan Tilton, who does mowing and repair jobs for the Town, tackled the downed limb and got most of it picked up. Next comes the big branch that broke off.

Town of Gilead

Today is Election Day. It looks like the Town Hall has been fairly busy with several voters coming in to cast their ballot. It is a long day to have to show up early to be there when the polls open at 10:00 AM until they close at 8:00 PM. Then there is still more paperwork after that before they are sealed up and locked in a safe place. Of course, if there is a recount, the ballots will have to be picked up by a secure messenger and taken to the Secretary of State in Augusta. Whenever this has happened in the past, Gilead has always come out with the same number of cast ballots as was originally reported.

Gilead Historical Society

The GHS is getting ready for the annual Community Friends and Family Day. This will be held on June 20^th at the Gilead Town Hall. People can start gathering around 11:00 AM and lunch will be at noon. We hope to have a good turnout again this year. Everyone is welcome. Lunch is free, so stop by for a hamburger or hot dog. The desserts and other items will be in the Town Hall. There will be a couple of people who can take your order and bring lunch into the hall if walking back and forth is a problem.

Pete and Claudia Risbara have been busy moving the plants from Diane ‘Dupont’ Bean’s Memorial Garden from the location behind the school to in front of the school between the steps by the flagpole.

After a while the plants will spread and fill in the area. The garden will be more noticeable as a focal point in the new location. The plaque is attached to the school.

This week I would like to thank Mariann Goff of East Bethel for her many years of service to the Bethel Area Age-Friendly Community Initiative. In her volunteer roles as an AFCI Board member, a Driver, and Rides Coordinator she has dedicated herself to the well-being of our older citizens. You may know her through her active community involvement in the Bethel Rotary Club and WMSC Senior Players. She is the one that plays her characters so well and makes us all laugh out loud! She is certainly a local treasure, and we will miss her as she retires from serving as a Rides Coordinator.

You may have questions about the Neighbor2Neighbor Rides Program

People age 60+ can have free rides to neighboring towns such as: South Paris/Norway, Rumford/Mexico, and Gorham/Berlin, NH. Or they may request rides around the Bethel area and other places within a 30-mile radius.

Volunteer drivers can take you to a variety of places: medical appointments, stores, social events and engagements.

The steps to follow are:

1.If you are a first-time rider, you must first call the AFCI 824-4444 number and leave a name, phone number and message. Someone will call you back and provide an application.

2. At least 3 days before your ride is needed, call the 824-4444 number to leave your name, telephone number, and message requesting the ride. Someone will return your call.

All Rides are free and every effort will be made to fulfil your request. While priority is given to medical appointments, please note that no rides are guaranteed.

We need more volunteer Drivers and Rides Coordinators. Please spread the word to friends and family—this is a rewarding way to serve the community and get to know neighbors. If interested, call 824-4444.

Here’s to the last week of school! I sure do remember those days. Graduation week went very well. I enjoyed seeing the seniors and trying to figure out who everyone was. There were several students I had never had, since they moved into the district later. Some seniors received an incredible amount of scholarships. It was a packed house at graduation, which lasted no more than an hour. I make a point of parking behind the school, so that I can exit through the back doors and get out quickly!

Locke’s Mills News

I had the most amazing experience while hiking in the Buck’s Ledge Community Forest on Sunday. I had hiked from the Route 26 trailhead to Lapham Ledge, then to Buck’s Ledge, with the intention of continuing to the summit of Moody Mountain on the mile-long trail that runs from Buck’s along the ridge.

I had been hearing ravens as I hiked below the ridge on my way to Buck’s Ledge, and I was hoping for a chance to see one when I got to the top, as I have a couple of times recently, but there were none to be seen when I arrived on the ledges. However, I had only gone about a quarter of a mile on the J&J trail along the ridge when I came upon a family of five ravens hanging out together in some trees on one of the smaller ledges along the trail.

There were two adults and three juveniles, and it appeared that I had happened upon a flying lesson. The young ones were so big it was hard to tell them apart from the parents, other than the fact that they were making only short, cautious flights, and spending a lot of time conversing with each other in little baby croaks as they sat on a tree branch.

I stayed and watched them for more than a half hour, during which the parents eventually flew off, leaving the fledglings discussing the situation amongst themselves for quite a while. I just happened to be taking a video of them at the moment when the parents returned and did a fly-by, which was apparently just what the babies needed to get them to abandon the safety of their tree branch and, amidst much squawking, take flight.

I don’t blame them for being cautious—it must be pretty scary to have to basically jump off a cliff the first time they try their wings. They all managed it just fine, though. Since by then it had started to rain, I turned around and headed back the way I had come, and the whole family followed along in the treetops for a short distance.

I had another bird encounter the next day, when I arrived home to find a big hawk perched on one of Tony’s apple trees. The general consensus is that it was a red-shouldered hawk, and I’m sure it was looking for a meal. I’ve taken down my bird feeders to avoid encouraging bears and raccoons, but there are still lots of birds around our yard—goldfinches, chipping sparrows, red-eyed vireos, pine warblers, American redstarts, common yellowthroats, and more, according to my phone’s Merlin app, which identifies them by their songs—and I’d rather not see them become dinner for a hawk. It’s welcome to the mice, though, and I wouldn’t mind a little thinning of the red squirrel population.

Howell writes that “Joseph Plumb Martin’illis Narrative of Some of the Adventures, Dangers, and Sufferings of a Revolutionary Soldier, first published in Hallowell, Maine, in 1830, offers both a counter-record of the facts of the War and a counter-method for relating them.” Howell is the author of “Starving Memory,” an article on Martin’s Narrative which appeared in Commonplace: The Journal of Early American Life.

At 6:30, there will be remarks by Goose Eye editor William Chapman and contributors Kirk Siegel and William B. Krohn.

Goose Eye No. 6 is entitled “Lines on a Map, Part One,” and is the first in a two-part series exploring some of the stories behind the many different kinds of lines that we take for granted when looking at a modern map. There those that represent natural features such as rivers, mountains, and coast line; those that identify physically real features created by human intervention, such as trails, roads, and railroad track; and still others that mark purely legal or political boundaries. The issues will seek to show how none of these are timeless or inevitable; they all reflect particular historical circumstances and contingencies. The lines on today’s maps encode a legacy of conflict and struggle by humans both against nature and against fellow humans.

Pupdate: Lena has been enjoying spending some time at camp and taking short (a half-mile or less) trail hikes. She’s still a bit of a hellion, and she still has her sharp puppy teeth, so I’ve pretty much resorted to wearing nothing but clothing she has already shredded. (If you see me around town in pants that are mostly holes, it’s not a fashion statement.) I’m constantly striving for the right balance between “not tired enough” and “overtired toddler” and constantly reminding myself (and Lena) that I’m supposed to be the boss in this relationship. I keep telling Will that I don’t remember Remy or Eli being quite this challenging as puppies, but he keeps telling me that I just don’t remember their puppy days. They both grew up to be wonderful adult dogs, so I hope he’s right, and Lena will, too.

If you read about our visit to the Finnish Picnic Grounds in last week’s column, and our discovery that Will, Tony, Lena, and I were all standing in a patch of poison ivy along the bank of the Little Androscoggin River, you’ll be glad to hear that none of us came down with the dreaded rash. Apparently wiping down Lena’s fur, showering as soon as we got home, and throwing all of our clothes into the washing machine did the trick. Whew!

The wood boiler may have been shut down for the season but the furnace is still coming on due to cool morning temperatures. Eventually this has to break and warmer temperatures become more consistent. I’m prepared for the hot sun when it returns in the afternoon to the back porch with shades installed. I finally found what I was looking for so we can enjoy afternoon and evenings on the porch while getting some relief when it is too hot.

The water level in the pool is up and the filter is running again. Now we just need it to warm up as that water sure is cold.

The apple blossoms have been blown to the ground and the lilacs are in full bloom and smell amazing. We have white in the back yard and purple in the front. I love taking pictures of bees and butterflies on the flowers and take several pictures waiting for the right angle. My hostas are very full and look great except for one of my variegated green ones which something decided to snack on, possibly my chickens.

Speaking of plants, the library plant sale is taking place on Saturday, June 6^th from 9-11am. Don’t miss it as it is a great place to get new additions while supporting the library. Most of my hostas were obtained at this sale and are amazing. I’ve missed the last few years due to other commitments but maybe I’ll make it this year.

Baking consisted of another new rhubarb recipe. This time it was a Rhubarb Crunch which was a big hit. Molasses cookies are on the list next as a request from Eliot.

Baseball continues and they had a home game Tuesday night against Poland and the kids did great. Eliot had a couple of great outs, one on first and one on third and hit a triple with his new bat. These kids are so supportive of each other and encouraging. It really is great to see how they have grown and learned to work together in the last month and we still have a couple more weeks to go.

Make sure to add the Community Engagement session to your calendar for June 23^rd at 6 p.m. at the Grange Hall. This session is being held by the Comprehensive Plan Committee to obtain input while they prepare the updated Comprehensive Plan. The next Comprehensive Plan meeting takes place on Monday, June 15^th at 5 p.m. at the Town Office.

Come visit the polls to vote in the Primary Election on Tuesday, June 9^th from 8 a.m.-8 p.m. If you have any interest in being a ballot/election clerk, please inquire at the Town Office.

Hello, June! I certainly wasn’t expecting to still be using my heated throw, but here I am! It has been the best thing for staying warm when I really don’t care to turn the heat on or up. It does look as though there are some warmer days ahead.

There have been a couple of garden work sessions at the Locke Mills Union Church. Rosalie MacArthur has spearheaded the effort, and it’s looking great.

I’ve been trying to get back into reading more, so naturally, I go to the library when I want a good book. Pat, our librarian, always has a recommendation for me. I recently read Yesteryear, followed that with The Things We Never Say. Both books sucked me right in. When I checked the bestsellers list in the Sunday paper, I saw that those two books were in the number one and two places! That compelled me to read a bit faster, so I could return it for another reader to take out. I have a couple of library books awaiting me now: The Book of Guilt, and A Daughter of Fair Verona.

As a child, I went to the library often. I could walk or bike down easily. It was one of my summertime activities—reading. I read every horse story I could get my hands on, and knew right where to look for them. I had quite a few Trixie Belden books, and there were many Bobbsey Twin books in the house. Both my parents were avid readers (when they had the time). Our local library is a real treasure!

This is graduation week for Telstar, as well as many other high schools around the state. I am playing for graduation once again. I went to the first marching practice today, and it went quite well. On Thursday it will be more marching practice, and then the Coming Together on Thursday evening. Friday is a full day with practice, senior assembly, and graduation. I love seeing who the seniors are each year. They are still former students, it’s a challenge myself to remember names. The Yorks’ grandson, Seth Dupuis, is one of the graduates, along with Reggie Billings, grandson of Tammy Hoy. Some of them have changed significantly, while I had no problem recognizing others. It’s also great to see my old buddy, Tera Ingraham, as she teaches the seniors the ropes.

My sister and I hosted a lunch for a few relatives recently. Now that camp is officially open, that’s our go-to party place. My (I should say our) brother Michael, came over from New Hampshire. We were joined by Jim and Julia Bennett, Karen Bennett, Dean Bennett, and Cheryl Martin. Rick was unable to join us, due to his very busy schedule. Dave grilled the chicken, and we had a delicious meal prepared by Susan. Lots of great visiting. With Dean back in the area, at Market Square, he is really enjoying getting out and seeing people. His daughter Cheryl, who lives in Wisconsin, comes back often to help her dad and visit with her mom.

I had a brief visit from my sister-in-law Martha recently. It’s always so good to see her. She was on a time schedule, so we talked extra fast, and got a lot into a short amount of time. She told me of the passing of her cousin, Amanda Bowers.

I completed my flower purchases (for now) at Mountain Greenery last week. I have a gorgeous sea of colors waiting for me. The lupines are opening, and columbines about to pop. Lilacs are on their way out, while the rhododendrons and bridal wreath are just starting. After the shrubs are all done blooming, they will be getting some serious trimming. Lucky for me, I know an arborist!

Not much news on the nests—I’ve seen birds going in and out of both. I’m not sure about babies yet, but did see a couple of parents chasing a crow out of the area. Speaking of crows, they are very interesting birds. There is a group (how many to make a murder?) of four crows who hang out in the neighborhood. They particularly like hanging out in the large field on the other side of the street. Each takes its place, spread across the field, as if on patrol. When you observe nature, you do learn a lot.

Next Tuesday is Election Day, so please get out there and do your civic duty. I will be at the Woodstock polls from 8-12 AM that day. I am sure that we can ALL agree that we’re sick of the political ads on TV.

I had been hearing ravens as I hiked below the ridge on my way to Buck’s Ledge, and I was hoping for a chance to see one when I got to the top, as I have a couple of times recently, but there were none to be seen when I arrived on the ledges. However, I had only gone about a quarter of a mile on the J&J trail along the ridge when I came upon a family of five ravens hanging out together in some trees on one of the smaller ledges along the trail.

There were two adults and three juveniles, and it appeared that I had happened upon a flying lesson. The young ones were so big it was hard to tell them apart from the parents, other than the fact that they were making only short, cautious flights, and spending a lot of time conversing with each other in little baby croaks as they sat on a tree branch.

I stayed and watched them for more than a half hour, during which the parents eventually flew off, leaving the fledglings discussing the situation amongst themselves for quite a while. I just happened to be taking a video of them at the moment when the parents returned and did a fly-by, which was apparently just what the babies needed to get them to abandon the safety of their tree branch and, amidst much squawking, take flight.

I don’t blame them for being cautious—it must be pretty scary to have to basically jump off a cliff the first time they try their wings. They all managed it just fine, though. Since by then it had started to rain, I turned around and headed back the way I had come, and the whole family followed along in the treetops for a short distance.

I had another bird encounter the next day, when I arrived home to find a big hawk perched on one of Tony’s apple trees. The general consensus is that it was a red-shouldered hawk, and I’m sure it was looking for a meal. Saturday, June 20, from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. at Sunset Farm (46 Intervale Road, Bethel): Goose Eye No. 6 Launch Party. Join the Museums of the Bethel Historical Society, the Mahoosuc Land Trust, and hosts, the Shepley family, to celebrate the launch of the latest edition of the MBHS annual history journal, Goose Eye. The evening begins at 5:30 with a short guided walk around the historic Intervale Gateway. (Meet at the corner nearest Davis Park.) At 6:00, congregate in the barn at Sunset Farm for light refreshments and a chance to pick up or purchase a copy of the new issue. At 6:30, there will be remarks by Goose Eye editor William Chapman and contributors Kirk Siegel and William B. Krohn.

Goose Eye No. 6 is entitled “Lines on a Map, Part One,” and is the first in a two-part series exploring some of the stories behind the many different kinds of lines that we take for granted when looking at a modern map. There those that represent natural features such as rivers, mountains, and coast line; those that identify physically real features created by human intervention, such as trails, roads, and railroad track; and still others that mark purely legal or political boundaries. The issues will seek to show how none of these are timeless or inevitable; they all reflect particular historical circumstances and contingencies. The lines on today’s maps encode a legacy of conflict and struggle by humans both against nature and against fellow humans.

Pupdate: Lena has been enjoying spending some time at camp and taking short (a half-mile or less) trail hikes. She’s still a bit of a hellion, and she still has her sharp puppy teeth, so I’ve pretty much resorted to wearing nothing but clothing she has already shredded. (If you see me around town in pants that are mostly holes, it’s not a fashion statement.) I’m constantly striving for the right balance between “not tired enough” and “overtired toddler” and constantly reminding myself (and Lena) that I’m supposed to be the boss in this relationship. I keep telling Will that I don’t remember Remy or Eli being quite this challenging as puppies, but he keeps telling me that I just don’t remember their puppy days. They both grew up to be wonderful adult dogs, so I hope he’s right, and Lena will, too.

If you read about our visit to the Finnish Picnic Grounds in last week’s column, and our discovery that Will, Tony, Lena, and I were all standing in a patch of poison ivy along the bank of the Little Androscoggin River, you’ll be glad to hear that none of us came down with the dreaded rash. Apparently wiping down Lena’s fur, showering as soon as we got home, and throwing all of our clothes into the washing machine did the trick. Whew!

The Whitman Memorial Library will be hosting Maine author, Jack Montgomery, on Thursday, June 18, at 10 AM at the library. Jack will be discussing his new book, From the Holocaust to Maine—Testimonies of the Survivors.

There have been a couple of garden work sessions at the Locke Mills Union Church. Rosalie MacArthur has spearheaded the effort, and it’s looking great.

I’ve been trying to get back into reading more, so naturally, I go to the library when I want a good book. Pat, our librarian, always has a recommendation for me. I recently read Yesteryear, followed that with The Things We Never Say. Both books sucked me right in. When I checked the bestsellers list in the Sunday paper, I saw that those two books were in the number one and two places! That compelled me to read a bit faster, so I could return it for another reader to take out. I have a couple of library books awaiting me now: The Book of Guilt, and A Daughter of Fair Verona.

As a child, I went to the library often. I could walk or bike down easily. It was one of my summertime activities—reading. I read every horse story I could get my hands on, and knew right where to look for them. I had quite a few Trixie Belden books, and there were many Bobbsey Twin books in the house. Both my parents were avid readers (when they had the time). Our local library is a real treasure!

This is graduation week for Telstar, as well as many other high schools around the state. I am playing for graduation once again. I went to the first marching practice today, and it went quite well. On Thursday it will be more marching practice, and then the Coming Together on Thursday evening. Friday is a full day with practice, senior assembly, and graduation. I love seeing who the seniors are each year. They are still former students, it’s a challenge myself to remember names. The Yorks’ grandson, Seth Dupuis, is one of the graduates, along with Reggie Billings, grandson of Tammy Hoy. Some of them have changed significantly, while I had no problem recognizing others. It’s also great to see my old buddy, Tera Ingraham, as she teaches the seniors the ropes.

My sister and I hosted a lunch for a few relatives recently. Now that camp is officially open, that’s our go-to party place. My (I should say our) brother Michael, came over from New Hampshire. We were joined by Jim and Julia Bennett, Karen Bennett, Dean Bennett, and Cheryl Martin. Rick was unable to join us, due to his very busy schedule. Dave grilled the chicken, and we had a delicious meal prepared by Susan. Lots of great visiting. With Dean back in the area, at Market Square, he is really enjoying getting out and seeing people. His daughter Cheryl, who lives in Wisconsin, comes back often to help her dad and visit with her mom.

I had a brief visit from my sister-in-law Martha recently. It’s always so good to see her. She was on a time schedule, so we talked extra fast, and got a lot into a short amount of time. She told me of the passing of her cousin, Amanda Bowers.

I completed my flower purchases (for now) at Mountain Greenery last week. I have a gorgeous sea of colors waiting for me. The lupines are opening, and columbines about to pop. Lilacs are on their way out, while the rhododendrons and bridal wreath are just starting. After the shrubs are all done blooming, they will be getting some serious trimming. Lucky for me, I know an arborist!

Not much news on the nests—I’ve seen birds going in and out of both. I’m not sure about babies yet, but did see a couple of parents chasing a crow out of the area. Speaking of crows, they are very interesting birds. There is a group (how many to make a murder?) of four crows who hang out in the neighborhood. They particularly like hanging out in the large field on the other side of the street. Each takes its place, spread across the field, as if on patrol. When you observe nature, you do learn a lot.

Next Tuesday is Election Day, so please get out there and do your civic duty. I will be at the Woodstock polls from 8-12 AM that day. I am sure that we can ALL agree that we’re sick of the political ads on TV.

The water level in the pool is up and the filter is running again. Now we just need it to warm up as that water sure is cold.

The apple blossoms have been blown to the ground and the lilacs are in full bloom and smell amazing. We have white in the back yard and purple in the front. I love taking pictures of bees and butterflies on the flowers and take several pictures waiting for the right angle. My hostas are very full and look great except for one of my variegated green ones which something decided to snack on, possibly my chickens.

Speaking of plants, the library plant sale is taking place on Saturday, June 6^th from 9-11am. Don’t miss it as it is a great place to get new additions while supporting the library. Most of my hostas were obtained at this sale and are amazing. I’ve missed the last few years due to other commitments but maybe I’ll make it this year.

Baking consisted of another new rhubarb recipe. This time it was a Rhubarb Crunch which was a big hit. Molasses cookies are on the list next as a request from Eliot.

Baseball continues and they had a home game Tuesday night against Poland and the kids did great. Eliot had a couple of great outs, one on first and one on third and hit a triple with his new bat. These kids are so supportive of each other and encouraging. It really is great to see how they have grown and learned to work together in the last month and we still have a couple more weeks to go.

Make sure to add the Community Engagement session to your calendar for June 23^rd at 6 p.m. at the Grange Hall. This session is being held by the Comprehensive Plan Committee to obtain input while they prepare the updated Comprehensive Plan. The next Comprehensive Plan meeting takes place on Monday, June 15^th at 5 p.m. at the Town Office.

Come visit the polls to vote in the Primary Election on Tuesday, June 9^th from 8 a.m.-8 p.m. If you have any interest in being a ballot/election clerk, please inquire at the Town Office.

This past weekend was the Moon Dance Farm goat cuddling event. I usually lend a hand as a “goat ambassador” but I was unable to attend this year.

Nothing says spring like those cute little kids making their appearance in the world. And the goodies made from the milk are delicious! Cheeses, yogurt and cajeta (caramel sauce) which is the best on ice cream or for dipping fresh crispy apples in.

Wednesday, June 10^th: Darlene Akers at the Dragonfly Healing Nest, 51 Akers Way, will be having an Open Nest Evening from 5-7 pm. Plant Swap and Teaching Garden Tour at 6 pm. Bring your extra seedlings, winter sowing extras, and/or perennials to share and go home with plants you would like in exchange. There will be plants flagged in the Teaching Garden that can be dug. Pots and tools to use will be available. There will also be a few select medicinal plants for sale. The Nest retail and in-house library will be open. Please note: The retail checkout will be closed during plant swap and teaching garden tour at 6pm, but will reopen shortly after.

Saturday, June 13^th: the annual plant sale will be taking place at the Andover Public Library. This will be held from 10-1 pm. After that there will be an Author Talk with Karen Swasey at the library from 2-4 pm.

I paid another visit to the library today to return “Project Hail Mary,” which I liked very much. Librarian Janet Farrington reserved “Remarkably Bright Creatures” for me and I was able to bring that home. Here’s hoping the firewood chores don’t interfere with some reading time. It was great to see young Miss Hannah Thacker helping out behind the library desk.

Another event in Andover will take place on June 20th from 9 am-2 pm at the Lone Mountain Campground will be holding their 2nd annual craft & vendor market. The first year had over 20 vendors and there will certainly be more this year. They also will have a food truck along with coffee & lemonade. If you are interested in a vendor spot, please email the campground at info@lonemountaincamping.com. I attended last year and the variety of crafters and vendors was wonderful. Lone Mountain Campground is growing by leaps and bounds; please take a ride up and see all they have to offer.

Here is a fun treasure hunt put on by our neighbors, The Ellis Pond Sidekicks: The Ellis Pond Sidekicks July magnet hunts are a month away. The hunts are open to the public and some of the magnets will be hidden in Andover. There are two hunts. One is for anyone and one is for kids 12 and under. To see the clues, you’ll need to be on Ellis Pond Sidekicks Facebook page. If you click to join, remember to answer three simple questions and agree to the rules or the FB bots will ignore the request. This sounds like a great activity for families to take part in once July arrives. I have fond memories of swimming at “The Pond” as a kid growing up in Andover.

On Saturday, June 13^th, the Ellis River Riders will be holding an open show at their grounds, 76 Airport Road, starting at 9 am, then on Sunday the 14th there will be a gymkhana show starting at 9 am. So many things to do and see in Andover this month! Please come on up and join in on one or all events!

This past week seems to have flown by. I attended the “Cookbook Swap” at the Andover Public Library last Wednesday. A nice cozy group gathered with goodies to share (I didn’t get the memo on that...my bad) and everything we sampled was delicious. We sat and talked about cooking, our go-to meals to make, favorite recipes and who was instrumental in getting us started with cooking and baking. It was noted that most people like to do one or the other, I however love to do both. It was my Grandmother Howard and my mother that I learned from. Those are some of my fondest memories being in the kitchen with them. We all left with “new to us” cookbooks. I hope that we will be able to do this again, it was a fun time for all.

While I was at the library I was able to take out the book “Project Hail Mary” which I had seen with my family on Mother’s Day. I am really enjoying it. Now I’m on the wait list for the book “Remarkably Bright Creatures” which I watched recently on Netflix. I’m excited to read that one as well. People say the book is much more detailed; time will tell!

I just love visiting the library. It is such a wonderful old building with so many books full of stories to tell. There is also a beautiful cardinal puzzle being built at the moment by those who want to take a few minutes away from the shelves of books.

On Friday I travelled with one of my former Bethel Citizen sales team coworkers to Portland. We started off the evening with an amazing meal at The Corner Room. Then we went to a venue called Aura to see the front man of one of my favorite ‘80s hair bands, Cinderella, Tom Keifer. Seeing as it was general admission, Jenn and I actually found room on the floor in front of the stage to enjoy the music. The show didn’t start until 9 pm and ended about 11:30. That didn’t count the time that we stood outside waiting for the doors to open. My feet and knees paid for it the next day but it was 100% worth it. I finally crawled into bed at 2 am and fell asleep almost immediately. Such a great night out...thanks Jenn!

On Monday my dad and I attended the Andover Memorial Day Service on the Common. Despite the pouring rain there was a very good turnout. It started with an opening prayer along with the Pledge of Allegiance. Hannah Thacker once again graced us with her beautiful, powerful voice by singing the National Anthem. A bell was tolled 28 times for the Andover men who died in service to our country during the Civil War, World War I and World War II. Christine Swain then read “Flander’s Field” and “We Shall Keep the Faith.” A placing of the Memorial wreaths, lowering of the flag and “Taps” followed by a closing benediction finished the ceremony.

After that a small group of gentlemen gathered at the Andover Historical Society Building to meet with reporter Rose Lincoln. The group had one thing in common, that they had all worked at one time at the Andover Earth Station in some capacity. I had reached out to Rose to see if she would be interested to hear some stories and history of the “Bubble.” My dear dad was one of them, and seeing as that he just celebrated his 89th birthday, it seemed important to gather these gentlemen before all these times and stories are forgotten. Please be on the lookout for this article to be published in a future Bethel Citizen. Thanks go out to my dad Ken Field, Dan Clark, David White, Danny White, Steve Hall and Rose Lincoln for indulging me to make this gathering happen. A huge thanks go out to Claire Sessions for taking time out of her day and letting us use the AHS building. Thank you Claire!

The Acoustipalians will kick off the Andover Summer Concert Series this Friday night, the 29th, on the Common. Concerts are held from 6-8 rain or shine, and are free to the public with donations gratefully accepted. Let’s all hope for great weather for the start of the 13th season; music always seems a bit better under clear skies.

The family of Edith “Joanne” Palmer wanted me to put in a reminder that she will be laid to rest this Friday the 29th. It will take place at the Woodlawn Cemetery in Andover at 2 pm.

Goat cuddling is taking place this weekend, Saturday May 30th at Moon Dance Farm. Reservations are required. Reserve your 30-minute session to cuddle the adorable goat kids. $9 per person or a family for $25 (children under 2 years old are free). Currently booking from 9am to noon, rain or shine. Also taking place this Saturday, May 30^th, is the annual Andover Town Meeting. It will be held upstairs at the Andover Town Hall beginning at 8 am. Absentee Ballots are now available at the Andover Town Office for the June 9, 2026 election.

Today’s column comes out on May 28th! The month of May just flew by at record speed. The next full moon is this Sunday, May 31st. Planting season is in full throttle. Greenhouse (hoop house) has spinach, leaf lettuce, beets, Swiss chard, and cucumber seeds planted. For seedling plants there are tomatoes, broccoli, Brussels sprouts, and cabbage making themselves at home. In the outside garden there are asparagus, rhubarb, Norland Red potatoes, Kennebec potatoes and string beans in the ground.

On the topic of plants, please mark your calendars for the Bethel Library’s annual plant sale on Saturday, June 6th from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. The Library is located on Broad Street and this annual fundraiser is a rain or shine event. Community support is appreciated!

Neighbors Feeding Neighbors will take place on Tuesday, June 9th from 4:30 to 6:30 p.m. at the Methodist Church located on Main Street. This is a free community meal with a focus on our local food pantry. Folks can bring nonperishable items to the church and all food collected will be brought to the food pantry on Wednesday morning. The meal this month will be side salads, beef ribs, chicken, and desserts. Come and have a great meal and meet some of our neighbors who live in our communities.

The first Saturday Market on Main Street took place over the Memorial Day weekend. The Re-Pant gals were at the Market and did a brisk business selling their Re-Pant bags. Proceeds from this group helps out our local food pantry.

Apple Shade Woodworks are two local folks, Kathryn Young and John Marzilli, who make beautiful wooden creations. Bowls, platters, and other hand crafted items are part of their local business. Such unique, hand-crafted items that make wonderful gifts.

Another local crafter is Rosie McArthur who is a talented seamstress, knitter, and can also crochet to make unique, handmade items. Another talent that Rosie has is a line dancing instructor. She will be offering classes on Tuesdays at the Community Annex at the Methodist Church and on Thursdays at the Locke Mills Union Church. These classes are from 6 p.m. to 7 p.m.

There was recently a yogurt making class in the Methodist Church kitchen. Susan Vogt Brooks was the instructor and she did a great job teaching the steps in making homemade yogurt. Susan has goats so her yogurt was made with goat’s milk. I make yogurt at home as well and it is an easy process. The trick is to keep track of the milk temperature. Looking forward to more cooking classes in the church kitchen.

Here we are and it’s the end of May already. Many of you are busy putting your gardens in as after this weekend we should be safe of frost.

The first Saturday Market of the season went quite well and it was nice to see many familiar faces. Rosie was there with all her beautiful creations. Plus her line dance lessons started up again also.

There seems to be a new business in the neighborhood. It’s called EBC V-Twin and according to their post on Team Bethel, they will take care of all your 2 and 4 wheel needs.

Tammy and Bill Hinckley will celebrate their 33rd anniversary May 29th. Happy Anniversary from the whole neighborhood, Tammy and Bill.

All you Fossils friends, they will be at the Locke Mills Legion this Saturday, May 30th from 6-8; donations are welcome.

Hopefully everyone had a nice Memorial Day. The weather was not very cooperative. The rain on Sunday continued into Monday morning, but mid-day the weather cleared. Of course, by then, area celebrations were moved inside.

Not much to write about this week. Evidently, the neighbors are just enjoying some of the beautiful days or they are just keeping to themselves.

The Gilead Fire Department has been called out this past week with a couple of accidents on Rt. 113. Bethel Rescue responded to both scenes. They transported a couple of patients to the hospital from one of them.

Gilead Historical Society

The GHS opened up the buildings last Saturday, May 23^rd, for the summer. They will be open on Saturdays from noon to 3pm. There were nine people (from Maine—Rumford Point and Bethel, from NH—Nashua and Shelburne), who stopped by to check out the buildings. There is coffee available and usually a snack, such as brownies.

Christopher Stewart, a Peabody descendent, stopped by a couple of weeks ago and dropped off some items for the GHS collections. He had a couple of school desks and some chairs. The chairs, which were made in the early 1800s, have been handed down through the Peabody family through the years. He said that they were made at the Peabody Tavern in the wintertime when the people had more time on their hands and could be more creative. During the summer, they were much busier with farming and maintaining the homestead.

On one wall of the schoolhouse, there is a Peabody Family display with photos of the family and the “Old Red House” throughout the years. There used to be a big barn and some other outbuildings.

There is also an original painting by John Francis Richardson, a member of the Peabody family who resided in Gilead from 1838-1849. John was the eldest son of Henry and Eunice “Thurston” Richardson. Henry was the Congregational minister for both Gilead and Shelburne, NH. It was donated to the GHS in 2007 from Robert and Joanne “Peabody” Stewart.

Often, for a more peaceful walk and a time for reflection and admiring nature, I walk on the spur of the Davis Park trail that takes you across the Alder River and across Middle Intervale Road (stay inside the guardrails on Route 26).

This leads to the trail on the Gateway of the Mahoosuc Land Trust. It is hard-packed gravel and offers beautiful views to the mountains.

I am sure many of you recognize this scene as you drive by. Those are interpretive signs that depict the mountains that you see from this vantage point.

Thanks to the Mahoosuc Land Trust, for the signs and to the hard working volunteers for trimming this iconic apple tree and giving it new life.

Also thank you for mowing areas of the land. It looks so inviting!

As you walk toward the end of this spur where you can turn around and retrace your steps you will see and hear an abundance of birds. The sound of distant traffic is amazingly subtle and I can guarantee that you will feel rejuvenated. Exercise and Nature right at your doorstep!

Inside fun and social time continues each Thursday afternoon, 12:00-2:00 pm, at the Whitman Memorial Library in Bryant Pond. Local folks and visitors from out of town are welcome. Please join us!

Summer is coming! My lifelong best friend and favorite taskmaster, Donna, came up last weekend to help me get camp open for the summer. Without her, we’d be living with a lot more dust, dirt, and grime at camp (some of it probably having accumulated over a period of years), but she insists on doing a thorough cleaning at both the beginning and end of the season.

On the topic of plants, please mark your calendars for the Bethel Library’s annual plant sale on Saturday, June 6th from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. The Library is located on Broad Street and this annual fundraiser is a rain or shine event. Community support is appreciated!
